Noto between Baroque city and ancient landscape
Noto combines an impressive Baroque urban layout with traces of antiquity and a diverse landscape within its own municipal area. The city is one of the eight cities included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto”. The entire historic center of Noto is part of this World Heritage Site. Today’s Noto was rebuilt at a new location, giving it a clearly structured historic cityscape with a distinctive character.
Baroque axes, squares, and churches
Today’s cityscape consists of an orderly street network laid out on sloping terraces. One of the main axes of this grid-like network is Corso Vittorio Emanuele. It is interrupted by three squares: Piazza dell’Immacolata, Piazza del Municipio, and Piazza XVI Maggio. Along Via Cavour are aristocratic palaces from the 18th century in the late Baroque style.
At the top of a monumental staircase with four flights stands the Cattedrale di San Nicolò. Its façade combines Baroque and classical elements and dominates Piazza Municipio. Following reconstruction and restoration, the cathedral reopened for worship on June 18, 2007. Another distinctive landmark is the Chiesa di San Domenico, a particularly representative late Baroque monument in Noto. Rosario Gagliardi designed it between 1703 and 1727 as a monastery church for the Dominican friars.
Ancient traces around Noto
The history of the area also includes Noto Antica, which was known by the name Netum. This was the ancient settlement of Noto, destroyed by the earthquake of January 11, 1693. Noto Antica was located on Monte Alveria, 8 kilometers north of the present-day city of Noto. The settlement was surrounded by powerful walls and the deep valleys of Monte Alveria.
Another historical layer is represented by the Villa Romana del Tellaro. It is a late Roman villa from the period of the late Roman Empire within the municipal area of Noto. Its floor mosaics include depictions of the return of Hector’s body and hunting scenes. The mosaics are dated approximately to the middle of the 4th century AD. This gives you a cultural spectrum ranging from ancient mosaics and the history of Noto Antica to late Baroque urban architecture.
Natural environment and local mobility
The Riserva Naturale Oasi faunistica di Vendicari is also located within the municipal area of Noto. Its wetlands are highly important for migratory birds and are home to hundreds of bird species every year during seasonal migrations. This natural environment complements the city’s historical themes with an independent perspective on the landscape and wildlife.
For getting around within the municipal bike-sharing system, there is “Noto in Bici”. This is the public, automated bicycle rental service of the Municipality of Noto. When choosing a hotel or other accommodation in Noto, you can therefore first determine your personal focus: Should the historic urban structure with its axes, squares, and churches be the main focus, or are you equally interested in the ancient sites and natural areas within the municipal area? The different themes help you consciously align your travel planning with your preferred location.
