Orange groves and the protected geographical indication “Arancia Rossa di Sicilia”

Francofonte is surrounded by extensive orange groves. If you include regional products in your trip, the town lies within the designated production area of the protected geographical indication “Arancia Rossa di Sicilia”. This connection gives the landscape and local character a clear culinary perspective, without reducing Francofonte to a single theme.

The Chiesa del Carmine: parish church since 1945

The Chiesa del Carmine has been a parish church since 1 July 1945 and is dedicated to Maria Santissima del Carmelo. The church houses, among other works, a valuable painting of the prophet Elijah. Maria Santissima della Neve is the patron saint of Francofonte.

The Ossena necropolis: Early Bronze Age and Castelluccio culture

The Ossena necropolis comprises prehistoric and protohistoric tombs from the Early Bronze Age, attributed to the Castelluccio culture. The area around Francofonte also includes the Zona Archeologica di Leontinoi archaeological site, the Area Archeologica del Castellaccio archaeological site and the Museo Archeologico di Lentini museum. The Castello Xirumi-Serravalle is also located nearby.

Castello di Chadra and the Grotta della Bambola

The Castello di Chadra is designed as a baglio. Its complex includes a large defensive tower on the west side of the main courtyard, as well as a fortified courtyard with two moats. Along the access road to the Castello di Chadra lies the cave “rutta ra pupa”, known in Italian as “Grotta della Bambola”.

Mountain, park and beaches

The Monte Lauro mountain is located near Francofonte. The Parco Suburbano Grotta del Drago park is also nearby. In the wider regional surroundings of Francofonte are the Spiaggia Agnone and Spiaggia Villaggio San Leonardo beaches. Thus, the landscape perspective extends from a mountain and a park to coastal destinations in the broader regional area. Choosing between Monte Lauro, the Parco Suburbano Grotta del Drago park, Spiaggia Agnone and Spiaggia Villaggio San Leonardo places emphasis on different landscapes.

Cycling on the Via dei Laghi: stage from Buccheri to Francofonte

For a cycling trip, the “La Via dei Laghi” cycle route offers a distinct point of interest. It includes the 22.10 km stage from Buccheri to Francofonte, which is classified as easy. The Francofonte point of this stage is located at Villa Idria. For day planning, the stage provides a clearly defined cycling section: the 22.10 km specify its scope, while the easy classification adds a sporting indication. You can take the specific route length and easy classification into account together when planning an individual cycling tour.
