Villa Bibbia: Hiking, Gorge and Rock Oratory

Villa Bibbia is a country house in Contrada Bibbinello, as it is known today. For individual travel planning, three different aspects come to the fore: the Anello del Bibbinello as a circular trail, the Cava Bibbinello as a landscape destination, and several sites of cultural and historical significance in Bibbinello.

The Anello del Bibbinello

The Anello del Bibbinello is a circular trail with several river crossings. It is classified as difficulty level E and has an elevation gain of around 200 metres. With a length of approximately 6 kilometres and a duration of about four hours, the hike has a clear temporal and topographical framework. The focus is not only on the length, but also on the form of the trail with its repeated crossings. The approximate duration of four hours represents a separate time window for planning the day; together with around 200 metres of elevation gain and difficulty level E, it describes the physical dimension of this circuit in addition to its length and crossings.

Between Bridge, Tunnel and River

The route first crosses a bridge over the Bibbinello and then passes through a short tunnel before continuing along the disused railway line beside the Anapo River. The bridge, tunnel, former railway line and river give the route a structured sequence. The Cava Bibbinello

The hike to Cava Bibbinello begins near Villa Bibbia between kilometres 84 and 85 of the SS 124. Cava Bibbinello is a small, shady gorge in the municipality of Palazzolo Acreide. Its small size and shady character create a different accent in the landscape from the course of the circular trail. Culture and Rock Architecture

Bibbinello is home to a Byzantine necropolis and a rock church. The rock oratory of Bibbinello is dated to a period no earlier than the 7th century. Dating it to a period no earlier than the 7th century leaves a time span open and does not specify a single date of origin. The cultural and historical focus therefore encompasses both a necropolis and sacred rock architecture, extending back in time to the early medieval period.

The rock oratory covers approximately 80 m² and consists of an artificially created, single-nave cave with a rectangular entrance. The approximate area, single-nave layout and rectangular entrance define the architectural form of this rock chamber. Together with the rock church, the oratory forms a distinct focal point alongside the hiking landscape.
