Beach, water and practical orientation

Fontane Bianche is known for its distinctive coastal landscape and a beach that is approximately 1,200 metres long and consists of white sand. Numerous freshwater springs emerge from the seabed beneath the beach. The sea shelves gently and is considered suitable for children of all ages. In summer, canoes and pedal boats are available at the beach—an addition to relaxing days of swimming if you would also like to experience the coast from the water.

For getting around locally, Fontane Bianche offers both free and paid parking. The beach resorts have ramps for people with disabilities. Lifeguards also assist people with disabilities at the beach.

Market and local cuisine

Local life is particularly evident at the Mercato del Contadino. It takes place every Tuesday from 17:00 to 20:00 from July to September. At Lido Fontane Bianche, hot and cold dishes made with local products are served daily at lunchtime. Underwater finds and landscape history

Fontane Bianche also has an unusual historical dimension beneath the water’s surface: an oar and a ship’s cannon were found during some underwater dives in the waters off Fontane Bianche. The best-known sinkhole lies at the terminal section of the Cavagrande del Cassibile and presumably contributes to feeding the numerous underwater springs along the coast from Fontane Bianche to Lido di Avola.

In the Fontane Bianche–Punta del Corvo area, there are sea caves and remains of vanished caves. Prehistoric fauna, including bone fragments from hippopotamuses, as well as a Palaeolithic stone industry, were found there. Fontane Bianche is also associated with a protohistoric and Classical necropolis; Byzantine catacombs are likewise associated with Fontane Bianche. This opens up a field of interest for culturally minded visitors that connects the coast, geological history and traces of human activity, without requiring these sites to be combined into a single tour.

Historical traces and present-day activities

The historic Tonnara complex of Fontane Bianche included a church, accommodation for tax collectors, warehouses, stables for transport animals and several dairy cows, as well as a fishing facility. Fontane Bianche is also home to a public skate plaza, considered the first public skate plaza in Sicily. Topographically, the Contrada Grottazze belongs to the Punta del Cane headland and forms its northern section; burial chambers carved into limestone are located there.
