Buseto Superiore: Nature, Trails and Sicilian Culture
When planning your trip around Buseto Superiore, several clearly distinct themes open up to you: woodland landscapes, trails, local collections, rural heritage and traditional festivals. This allows you to experience the character of the area through nature, outdoor activities and everyday culture.
Woodland Landscapes and Nature Experiences
Bosco Scorace is a 750-hectare historic cork oak forest with conifers, cypresses, holm oaks, impressive oaks, aromatic shrubs and wild berries. The animals living there include rabbits, hares and porcupines, among others. Nature trails in Bosco Scorace lead to a hill lake and to a 642-metre-high viewpoint offering wide views over the surrounding landscape.
A developed area of Bosco Scorace is located 3 kilometres southeast of Buseto Superiore. There are car parks, equipped areas with rustic benches, tables and cooking facilities, as well as play equipment for children. This allows you to combine observing nature with different ways of spending time in the forest.
Trails for Hiking and Cycling
The nature and scenic circular route from Buseto Palizzolo connects Bosco Scorace with Monte Luziano. A branch from the Greenway also passes through Bosco Scorace to Buseto Palizzolo. The Greenway is a cycle and footpath laid out along the route of the unfinished, never-operated narrow-gauge railway between Salemi and Kaggera, which was planned during the Fascist era.
For sports-oriented travel plans, the enduro course documented for 2025 is also of interest: it included timed sections on both slopes of Bosco Scorace, as well as transfers along forest and gravel roads with elevation gains of 220 and 200 metres respectively.
Culture in Buseto Centro
The Pinacoteca e Biblioteca Comunale includes an art gallery with 94 paintings by local artists and artists from the province. The Biblioteca Comunale is located in Buseto Centro in the premises of a former primary school and contains 14,518 books as well as 5,928 magazines, periodicals and multimedia media. Alongside the trails and landscapes, both institutions add a cultural perspective to your stay.
Rural Heritage and Local History
Baglio Murfi is an old rural centre of Buseto Palizzolo. Amid courtyards, arches and old houses, the site preserves the memory of agricultural life. A small rural chapel and a characteristic livestock watering area bear witness to its former agricultural and residential uses.
Festivals, Crafts and Regional Cuisine
The Festa del Grano in Tangi, a hamlet of the municipality of Buseto Palizzolo, presents the various stages of the grain harvest, from mowing and threshing to winnowing and storage. The festival includes folk performances and traditional dishes. At the Sagra della Busiata, you can enjoy busiate with pesto alla trapanese, ragù made with local meat and mushrooms gathered in the Bosco di Scorace, as well as Sicilian wines; there are also live performances. The Mostra Mercato sull’artigianato is a fair dedicated to traditional crafts and old trades.
