Petrosino: Coast, Wine and Sicilian History

Petrosino combines free beaches, vineyards and historic evidence into a versatile destination on the Sicilian coast. Between coves, former seafaring villages, churches and rural culture, you will discover a place whose character is shaped both by the sea and by its agricultural past.

Free Beaches and Experiences by the Sea

Torrazza Beach lies on a broad, scenic bay with clear water. It is a free public beach and therefore offers a clearly defined coastal destination for planning your trip. The Sibiliana coast is also a free public beach. It lies on the border between the municipalities of Petrosino and Marsala, combining coastal scenery with a distinctive regional location.

Biscione was an old seafaring village and is now a holiday area. Its coast offers several diving opportunities, with descents to depths of 10 to 60 metres. The sea around Petrosino is also suitable for sailing excursions. The maritime range therefore extends from relaxing days at the beach to activities on and beneath the water.

Churches and Bagli Between History and Architecture

The Church of Maria Santissima delle Grazie was built in 1745. Its patron saint's festival, the Festa della Patrona Maria SS. delle Grazie, is celebrated every year at the end of May with a procession of the simulacrum. The Chiesa di San Giuseppe is a 19th-century church that was originally planned as a private chapel for Marquis Spanò. Its neoclassical façade features long pilasters, a moulded cornice and a triangular pediment.

Baglio Woodhouse was built by John Woodhouse in 1813. The original elements that have been preserved include the entrance portal and frescoes on the upper floor depicting grapevines. Baglio Spanò was built between 1873 and 1882 by Marquis Nicolò Spanò, who came from Marsala. The building has a square floor plan and two interconnected courtyards.

Festivals and Rural Traditions

The traditional Invito di San Giuseppe takes place every year on 19 March in front of the church in the district of the same name. In August, the Festa di chianura is celebrated in the alleys of Chianu Parrini. Foreign and local folklore groups bring aspects of former rural and maritime life back to life.

Two truncated-cone-shaped windmills built in the 19th century have been preserved in Petrosino. They bear witness to their former function of grinding grain. The Museo della civiltà contadina is located in the local middle school of the Istituto Comprensivo “G. Nosengo”. There, tools and objects preserve techniques from agriculture, workshops and households.

Vineyards and Coastal Marshes

Petrosino's vineyards include grape varieties such as Grillo and Catarratto, which are used to produce Marsala wine. The Sagra dell'uva e del vino takes place between September and October and includes wine tastings. Margi Spanò is also among the coastal marshes in the Petrosino area. These are designated as SIC and ZPS and are important for the passage of migratory birds.
