Olive Groves, Fields and Coast

Campobello di Mazara lies on a plain at 100 metres above sea level. The predominantly agricultural landscape is characterised by extensive fields with centuries-old olive trees, vineyards, citrus groves and almond orchards.

Ancient Stoneworking and Architecture

The Cave di Cusa supplied the large capitals and columns of Temple G. It was used from the 6th century BC until the end of the Greek city; the Punic conquest led to the abrupt cessation of stone quarrying.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria al Presepe is a neoclassical basilica with three naves and a rectangular apse with a shell-vaulted ceiling. It houses a carved crucifix by Frate Umile da Petralia (1580–1639). The Torre dell’Orologio combines references to classical Renaissance and Sicilian-Norman architecture. Its construction began in 1858, and the exterior decoration was completed in 1877.

Rural Heritage and Nocellara del Belìce

The Museo della Civiltà Contadina is located in the Baglio Florio in Contrada Cave di Cusa in Campobello di Mazara. The collection includes objects from local rural occupations, including fishing, carpentry, blacksmithing and rope-making. Until the end of the 19th century, the Baglio Florio was inhabited by agricultural labourers who worked the surrounding estate year-round or seasonally. The museum and building thus bring together everyday work, agriculture and crafts.

The Nocellara del Belìce DOP is also part of the local profile. The second edition of the Nocellara Expo in Campobello di Mazara promoted the variety as well as its olive oil and table olives. This history of use and defence adds a historical perspective on the coast to the beach.
