Ancient Landscape around Selinunte

Castelvetrano combines a multifaceted urban history with significant landscapes along the Sicilian coast. The Archaeological Park of Selinunte is located in the municipality of Castelvetrano. Selinunte was one of Sicily’s most important Greek colonies, providing direct access to the island’s ancient history.

The Archaeological Park of Selinunte covers approximately 270 hectares. Sandy ground, unpaved paths and routes that are not level everywhere characterize the site. Tourist trains connect the park’s main areas; they are not included in the admission price and may not be fully accessible.

Squares, Churches and Museums

The Chiesa di San Domenico stands in Castelvetrano’s historic centre. The Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta also anchors the city in its long architectural history: construction began in 1520, and the cathedral has a basilica-style layout with three naves. The Sistema delle Piazze forms a distinct urban sequence. It is a connected group of the three main squares—Garibaldi, Umberto I and Cavour—which are linked to one another and directly adjacent.

The Selinuntino Civic Museum preserves archaeological heritage from the ancient Greek city of Selinunte and is housed in the restored Renaissance building Palazzo Majo. The Teatro Selinus is an elegant neoclassical building in the heart of Castelvetrano. The Ethnoanthropological Museum of Peasant Life in Castelvetrano offers another way to explore the region’s history and bears witness to rural life in Sicily. The Santuario di Demetra Malophoros is considered one of the most important cult complexes in Greek Sicily.

The Fontana della Ninfa was built in 1615. It commemorates the completion of the Bigini aqueduct, which brought water to the town of Castelvetrano.

Local Traditions on the Plate

The Sagra del Pane Nero di Castelvetrano reached its second edition in 2025. The event focuses on Castelvetrano black bread and flour made from the ancient Tumminìa wheat. Both are regarded there as symbols of the local agri-food tradition.

Coast, Dunes and Underwater Worlds

The Foce del fiume Belice e dune limitrofe nature reserve protects an approximately 5-kilometre stretch of coast between Marinella di Selinunte and Porto Palo di Menfi. The beach in the nature reserve is a nesting site for the loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta. Thus, the coastal landscape includes not only an open sandy beach but also a protected habitat of particular importance to wildlife.

At the mouth of the Belice River lies a well-preserved sandy coastal geosite. There, visitors can observe the complete beach profile and the ongoing development of the dunes. Small coastal wetlands have formed near the mouth of the Belice River within this geosite.

Triscina di Selinunte has beaches with fine, golden sand. The seabed off Triscina attracts many divers, who explore its varied and richly structured underwater landscapes.

Special Access Points and Routes

On 21 June 2026, the entrance to the Archaeological Park of Selinunte on the Triscina side was reopened with an opening walk. From there, the Gaggera sanctuaries can be reached.

The “Tour Nocellara Bike” was planned as part of the Nocellara Festival; its designated starting point was at the Sistema delle Piazze in Castelvetrano.
