Gibellina combines outdoor art with festivals and museums. In Gibellina Nuova, around fifty architectural works and outdoor sculptures shape the townscape; at the same time, this collection forms a large open-air museum. The Orestiadi bring together theatre, dance and music, while Gibellina Photoroad adds another cultural dimension as an open-air, site-specific photography festival. This creates a destination where architecture, a culture of remembrance and events stand closely side by side.

Art and architecture in Gibellina Nuova

The artistic landscape of Gibellina Nuova cannot be reduced to a single building. Around fifty works are distributed as outdoor architecture and sculptures, shaping the character of the large open-air museum. The Chiesa Madre provides a prominent architectural reference point. It is located on the highest part of a small hill overlooking the plain of Gibellina Nuova. Its position therefore creates a clear topographical contrast with the open plain.

The Orestiadi are also part of Gibellina's cultural history. The first performance took place in 1982 with Emilio Isgrò's “Gibella del martirio”. The Orestiadi di Gibellina festival brings together theatre, dance and music.

Photography and remembrance of the Belìce

Gibellina Photoroad is an open-air, site-specific photography festival and is considered the first festival of its kind in Italy.

The Belìce/EpiCentro della Memoria Viva offers an impressive, exploratory exhibition tour providing insights into the landscape of the Belìce, popular movements and natural events. The museum also displays collections by artists and photographers who documented the Belìce and its history. Its holdings include paintings, sculptures, terracottas, writings, tapestries, jewellery, panels and original garments. Reservations seven days in advance are required for guided visits to the museum.

Palaces, castles and museums in the surrounding area

In the vicinity of Nuova Gibellina is the Palazzo Crescenti Del Ponte Di Sciacca, a palace. Castello Grifeo Partanna, a castle, and the Museo Etno-Antropologico, a museum, are also located in this area. Castello Eufemio is likewise classified as a castle there. These different types of buildings and museums broaden the perspective beyond the outdoor artworks and make the surrounding area interesting for exploring its cultural history.

Beaches in the wider regional area

Several beaches are located in the wider regional area around Nuova Gibellina. They include Playa di Castellammare, Guidaloca, Playa Lido Zabbara and Spiaggia di Alcamo Marina. The geographical classification is deliberately regional: these are not beaches immediately in Nuova Gibellina, but destinations in the wider surrounding area.

Cycling route near Gibellina

The surrounding area also offers a specific point of reference for planning a cycling trip. The Trasversale Sicula cycling route includes a stage from Calatafimi to Nuova Gibellina, the Bosco Baronia variant.
