Anterselva di Sopra: Antholz Lake, Mountain Trails and Valley Character

Anterselva di Sopra is also known as Antholz Obertal, lies at an altitude of 1,530 m and is the last village in the Antholz Valley. As a scattered settlement, the village consists of several farms and houses and stretches from Antholz Mittertal to Antholz Lake. The area between the settlement and the lake provides the setting for nature trails, cultural traces and sporting destinations.

Antholz Lake and Trails through Nature

Antholz Lake is a central reference point for exploring the surrounding area. The Antholz Lake nature trail features sixteen stations highlighting the special characteristics of nature and other interesting aspects of the lake. There is also a practical point of reference for getting between the valley and the lake: Bus route 431 runs from Olang-Antholz railway station to Antholz Lake. The lake is also the starting point for the circular trail around it. The hikes around Anterselva di Sopra lead to a variety of landscape features. The Two-Lakes View hike leads to a viewpoint overlooking Antholz Lake, Obersee at Staller Sattel and the surrounding mountains of the Rieserferner Group.

The alpine hike to Rieserfernerhütte leads higher up. It runs via Schwörzalm and Gemsbichljoch to the hut at 2,791 m. Another route follows an old military road to the unmanned Grüblalm at 2,038 m. From there, you can ascend via a switchback trail to Grüblscharte at 2,394 m.

Culture on the Mill Trail and in the Village

The “Tränkabachl” Mill Trail runs along the Tränkabachl stream and passes restored mills, old fences and traditional dry-stone walls. Information boards and a digital trail companion provide information about the history and cultural heritage of the region. This gives the trail a historical and cultural dimension in addition to its connection with the landscape.

Anterselva di Sopra is also home to the St. Joseph Chapel. Built in 1815, the chapel is also known as Steinzger-Stöckl. The name is therefore just as much a part of the village landscape as the farms and houses of the scattered settlement.

The “Olympic Arena South Tyrol” biathlon and cross-country skiing centre is located in Antholz Obertal. It hosts the Biathlon World Cup. For cycling, the 9.4 km Biathlon South Tyrol Arena Round mountain bike route is particularly relevant; it starts in Anterselva di Sopra. Together, these two destinations complement the hiking and nature experiences with a sporting focus.
