Bolzano between urban history and the present day

Bolzano is ideal for a trip that brings together urban history, art, regional cuisine and paths along the water. Cultural attractions include churches, monuments, historic streets and squares, museums and castles. Different cultures come together here: in art, painting influenced by Giotto stands alongside Gothic works, while the Talfer River separates the historic city from the newer city architecturally.

Museums of archaeology, art and everyday history

At the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology, Ötzi is publicly visible in a specially developed refrigerated cell. The conditions of a glacier are recreated inside it. The museum also presents a permanent exhibition about the Iceman and the objects found with him. The Museion focuses on a different area: as a museum of modern and contemporary art, it promotes international art, culture and innovation in South Tyrol. Its collection currently comprises around 4,400 works.

The South Tyrol Museum of Nature is housed in the former administrative headquarters of Emperor Maximilian I; its main attraction is a saltwater aquarium. The Bolzano School Museum conveys the historical experience of the Italian, German and Ladin communities through teaching materials, photographs, certificates, documents, furnishings and posters. At the Mercantile Museum, a chronological tour through the Palazzo Mercantile traces the economic history of the city of Bolzano, using archival documents, paintings and original works of art.

Castles, frescoes and the world of the mountains

Roncolo Castle preserves the largest and best-preserved secular fresco cycle of the Middle Ages. The scenes depict courtly life, hunting scenes, knightly tournaments and everyday life. Mareccio Castle is a 13th-century castle near the historic old town of Bolzano. It stands in a Lagrein vineyard and is used for exhibitions, concerts, cultural evenings and conferences.

Flavon Castle preserves valuable 16th-century frescoes and offers views of Bolzano, the Adige Valley and, to the north, the Salten plateau, the Sarntal Valley and the Renon. Flavon Castle is open to the public as a restaurant and as a venue for celebrations and receptions. At the Messner Mountain Museum Firmian in Firmiano Castle, towers, halls and courtyards provide an overview of the world of the mountains and, in particular, of the relationship between people and mountains.

Historic old-town walks with history and culinary delights

A guided tour through Bolzano’s old town leads through medieval alleys, beneath the arcades, across the fruit market, into the courtyard of the town hall and into a selected church. It ends at Waltherplatz. Those who want to look deeper beneath the visible city can use the tour „Underground Bolzano“ as a thematic introduction: it leads through the cathedral crypt, to the archaeological excavations beneath the Hannah Arendt School, into the historic cellars of the Mercantile Building and into other vaulted spaces beneath the historic arcaded houses.

A tour through the historic old town includes three stops featuring typical Bolzano specialities, house wine, beer and small regional delicacies. The culinary tour through Mustergasse and the historic Campofranco courtyard continues to the Mercato Centrale, where four tasting stops offer various regional and Italian specialities. The „Speck Safari“ introduces South Tyrolean speck during a meeting with a speck ambassador. The history, production methods and quality guidelines are explained; the tour concludes with a tasting of this traditional product and a glass of wine in a traditional inn.

Walks along the Talfer and paths through the wine landscape

Extensive green spaces and well-equipped playgrounds lie along the banks of the Talfer. They are suitable for long walks and bicycle tours. Along the river, numerous smaller bridges enable short and long walks as well as circular routes for pedestrians and cyclists. Along the cycle paths to Bolzano Sud, the walls are decorated with colourful murals.

The REBE wine trail comprises ten artistically designed installations that offer insights into wine-growing culture. At the same time, it connects Bolzano with Signat, the vineyards, Rentsch and the historic Ansitz Waldgries winery. Another path leads through orchards and vineyards to a viewpoint overlooking Bolzano and ends at the Rafenstein inn.

Runkelstein Castle can be reached from Bolzano on foot via the green Lungotalvera promenade, by bicycle via the cycle path or by bus route 12. A path from Bolzano follows the Talfer Gorge, offers views of Runkelstein Castle and Ried Castle, passes a waterfall and the remains of Walbeinstein Castle, and reaches the Rafenstein inn after the Talfer Bridge, with panoramic views of the city and the castle ruins.
