Nature and character of Toblach

At Lago di Dobbiaco lies a relatively undisturbed wetland that serves as a nesting site for many species of waterbirds. Those who want to experience the landscape attentively will find a clear focus for nature observation here. Its function as a nesting site places the birdlife at the center and gives a stay at the lake its own time frame. A quiet observation period can be planned for this visit before longer routes or sporting activities shape the day. Observation can thus remain the focus without combining it with planning a long hike or bike tour.

Music and historical sites

The historic Way of the Cross in Dobbiaco is considered the oldest in all of Tyrol. The Gustav Mahler Music Weeks have been held annually since 1981. Those planning the cultural part of their trip can consider the historic route independently of the annually recurring music series and separate the two topics in terms of timing.

The Grand Hotel in Dobbiaco is home to the Euregio Cultural Centre and houses the Gustav Mahler Hall. Gustav Mahler’s composer’s cottage, which has been preserved to this day, lies in a green setting and is easily accessible on foot. At the Three Peaks Nature Park visitor center, you can learn a great deal about the history of the Dolomites. Cross-country skiing, hiking and cycling

For active days, the Nordic Arena in Dobbiaco is an important point of reference. It enables sporting activities all year round and is considered one of the largest sports centers in the Puster Valley. The Nordic Arena also includes a cross-country ski school and a cross-country ski rental service. Those planning to go cross-country skiing can include these two Nordic Arena services in their preparations. The approximately 30-kilometer-long Dobbiaco–Cortina cross-country ski trail starts at the Nordic Arena, runs through the Landro Valley and follows the former railway line. Those planning to complete the entire route should allow a longer part of the day for it.

Longer excursions can also be included in your travel plans. The Alta Via di Dobbiaco is approximately 28 kilometers long and requires around nine hours of walking. The route therefore belongs in an extended day plan, not in a short walk between other scheduled activities. For cycling, the Dobbiaco–Cortina e-bike tour leads from Dobbiaco to Cortina via the old Alta Pusteria railway line through the Landro Valley. Along the way, it passes two lakes and the Tre Cime/Landro viewpoint. These points can serve as reference points when planning your time on site. Both tours pass through the Landro Valley and use an old or former railway line, but they differ in terms of the sport involved. The different route lengths help you realistically assess your time and the desired scope of activities.
