Landscape between Prader Sand and Sonnenberg
From the foot of Stelvio National Park at an altitude of 900 metres, Prad am Stilfserjoch stretches up to the Lichtenberg farms at 1,500 metres. The natural area includes the protected Prader Sand biotope, a natural alluvial area in the sandy river delta of the Suldenbach stream. Three different hiking routes lead through the floodplain landscape to the Fischerseen lakes. The paths through Prader Sand are also suitable for families with pushchairs. The 4-kilometre Nittweg dendrological trail, featuring 54 tree and shrub species from the damp valleys of Nörderberg and the dry Sonnenberg, offers another perspective on the vegetation.
Hiking trails with history and views
The 2-kilometre circular Gumperle Trail begins below St. George’s Church in Agums. Along the Lottersteig trail, the hike follows a well-developed network of paths through meadows and forests above Prad am Stilfserjoch, offering views of the village as well as the entire Upper and Lower Vinschgau. The Archaikweg circular hiking trail follows sections of the historic Alpine crossing route, passing the prehistoric settlement of “Gaschlin” and running from Prad towards Agums to the upper Suldenbach bridge. The entrance to Trail No. 11 is located there.
Churches, chapels and frescoes
The churchyard of St. John’s Church in Prad am Stilfserjoch contains the grave of botanist Hermann Müller, commemorated by a marble plaque. In Lichtenberg, St. Christina Chapel dates from 1575 and features a three-sided closed chancel, murals and a shingle roof. Lichtenberg parish church contains structural remains and frescoes from the 13th century. A few frescoes have been preserved in the chapel of Lichtenberg Castle ruins; they were restored in 2006. St. George’s in Agums is an ensemble consisting of a church, cemetery chapel and cemetery. Because of its exposed location, it is used by many hikers as a panoramic viewing platform.
Customs, fires and Carnival
Every year on the third Sunday after Pentecost, Sacred Heart fires are lit on the mountain ridges above Prad am Stilfserjoch. The Zusslrennen is an ancient custom practised only in Prad to drive away winter; at the same time, it is a carnival procession and a noise ritual. Young men wear white robes decorated with colourful paper flowers and often carry cowbells weighing more than 20 kilograms. Carnival also includes the traditional Maschgertanz: masked couples move from one inn to another and dance according to established rituals.
