Monte Cavallo and historic cityscapes

If you are considering Sterzing and the surrounding area for your holiday, you will find various opportunities for days focused on nature, culture and activities. Monte Cavallo offers easy hiking trails over short distances. On hikes there, views extend across the Alps to the Dolomites. This combination is particularly appealing if you would like to combine exercise with expansive landscapes without making long distances the main focus.

The church as a historical focal point

South of Vipiteno stands the parish church of “Nostra Signora della Palude”, one of the largest churches in the Alpine arc. It contains the Roman funerary stele of Postumia Victorina, which probably dates from the 2nd or 3rd century AD. The Gothic altar by Multscher also reaches far back into history: it was created for this parish church between 1456 and 1459. The Neo-Gothic high altar still contains five original statues from Multscher’s Gothic altar, which was dismantled in the 18th century.

Town hall, tower and museum

The town hall of Vipiteno has a Gothic council chamber with wood-panelled walls and a ceiling with exposed wooden beams. The Torre delle Dodici provides a different accent: the 46-metre-high town tower from the 15th century is also a landmark of the city. In Vipiteno, you therefore encounter both carefully designed interiors and a striking structure from the city’s history.

The Museo Civico e Museo Multscher is housed in the Deutschhaus, the residence of the commandery of the Teutonic Order, and is located near the parish church of Vipiteno. It houses most of the late Gothic works by the renowned Ulm sculptor and painter Hans Multscher. For visitors interested in culture, this creates a clear focal point: architecture, sacred art and the work of a single artist can be viewed within a close thematic context.

Wellness, high ropes course and cycle path

The Balneum in Vipiteno has indoor and outdoor pools as well as an Alpine-style sauna and wellness area. The SKYTREK adventure high ropes course is located in Parco Nord in Vipiteno, two minutes from Vipiteno’s historic centre. Both attractions provide a different focus from the churches and museums, complementing the cultural themes with relaxation and activity. You can consciously decide which of these aspects you would like to emphasise more during your days of travel.

There is also a specific point of reference for a trip by bicycle: Vipiteno lies on the Brenner–Bolzano cycle path. If you plan your days around your interests, you can set different priorities among culture, exercise, relaxation and activity. When choosing your accommodation, it makes sense to decide in advance what kind of stay you would like.
