Castellano: Churches, Nature and Castelfolk
Accommodation in Castellano
Cultural history in Castellano
Castellano combines cultural history, landscape and a regular summer event. The Chiesa di San Lorenzo martire dates from 1770–1778 and was partly built using materials from the former church. Inside stands the old stone baptismal font, which comes from the Chiesa di S. Martino. This architectural detail connects the history of the two churches in Castellano. The Chiesa di San Lorenzo martire thus represents a building phase from the late 18th century, while the baptismal font also preserves the connection with the Chiesa di S. Martino.
The historic surroundings also include the Chiesa di S. Martino di Trasiel. It was first documented in 1220; from the mid-17th century until almost the end of the 18th century, it is mentioned as the residence of a hermit. The Castellano Castle provides another distinctive feature. It is a fortified residence in a location with panoramic views. A long wall runs down the slope to the Watch Tower. If you would like to visit the Castellano Castle, a telephone appointment is required; the building is privately owned. Castellano therefore brings together a church documented since 1220, a former hermit's residence and a fortified residence with a wall and Watch Tower.
Landscape and nature around Castellano
Lago di Cei is located near Castellano at an elevation of 920 m above sea level. The lake formed when a major landslide blocked the valley in the mid-13th century. This formation is part of the lake's landscape history. PrĂ dell'Albi is also located nearby, a biotope with a species-rich, dense marshland. Alpine newts, tree frogs, agile frogs and fire salamanders are found there. The Selva di Daiano is characterised by distinctive vegetation and abundant water. Lago di Cei represents the formation of a landscape through natural forces, PrĂ dell'Albi a wet habitat, while the Selva di Daiano is shaped by vegetation and water.
Panoramic route and summer festival
For orientation in the landscape, the NWP Castellano-Cei panoramic route has a clearly described starting point. It begins in Castellano, is approximately 10 km long and has an elevation difference of 100 m. The approximate length remains an estimated value; together with the stated elevation difference, it provides two specific figures for planning your trip. This allows you to assess the scale of the route without assuming any further characteristics of the trail. Considering both values together helps you view the scale of the route separately from its elevation difference.
Castelfolk has taken place in Castellano since 2001 as a regular summer event on the first weekend of August. The festival organises concerts, music, performances, conferences, debates, exhibitions and activities for different age groups. The recurring event complements the historic sites and natural areas with a cultural event in summer. The festival thus combines music and performances with discussion and exhibition formats.
