Riva del Garda Between Lakeside and Urban History

Riva del Garda combines the orientation of a historic town with prominent buildings, Lake Garda and a varied surrounding area. The historic centre lies between the harbour and the lower slopes of Monte Rocchetta. This gives you a destination where urban history, water and landscape can be explored through specific places.

Historic Buildings by the Water

Torre Apponale is documented as early as the 13th century and historically served primarily to monitor and defend the town. The climb consists of 165 steps and offers panoramic views over the centre of Riva del Garda and Lake Garda. Tickets for Torre Apponale are available at the entrance.

Rocca di Riva, a medieval fortress, stands on the shores of Lake Garda. The monumental hydroelectric power station of Riva del Garda is also located on the lakeshore. It was built in the 1920s based on a design by Giancarlo Maroni, D’Annunzio’s architect and the former creator of the Vittoriale degli Italiani. A tour booked in advance is required to visit the hydroelectric power station.

Landscape, Panoramas and Notable Heights

Monte Brione is home to more than 20 species of wild-growing orchids. This means that, alongside its historic buildings, Riva del Garda also offers a tangible natural aspect for visitors who do not want to spend all their time in the town centre. The nearby area also includes Cima Valdes, which is recorded as a summit.

Other summits in the surrounding area include Cima di Le and Cima Sclapa. Both are recorded as summits; Cima di Le is located in the immediate vicinity of Riva del Garda, while Cima Sclapa is in the surrounding area. The Bastione panoramic lift features a panoramic cabin made entirely of glass.

Routes and Activities by the Water

The Ponale Road was converted into a cycle and pedestrian path in 2004.

When choosing accommodation or a hotel, these different focuses can provide useful guidance for your personal travel planning: urban history, nature observation, cycling and walking routes, or water sports can be considered as separate interests.

Other Historic Places in the Surrounding Area
