Discover Grauno: Traditions, village history and paths along the Rio dei Molini
Accommodation in Grauno
Grauno between tradition and village history
Grauno combines a distinctive village layout with traditions passed down through generations. The Carnevale di Grauno is marked by the burning of a pine tree; this rite is intended to appease and promote fertility. Traditionally, the Carnevale begins at midnight on Epiphany. For this purpose, the conscripts of the respective year cut pine trunks in the forest, bring them to the village and tie them to the columns of the four fountains. The tradition is therefore closely connected with the fountains and the appearance of the village.
The historic settlement includes steep lanes known as “frone”, as well as large historic fountains between the houses. In the centre of Grauno stands the parish church of San Martino on a raised terrace. Padre Atanasio Cristofori is also part of the village’s personal and spiritual heritage: Grauno is his birthplace. The herbalist monk wrote the book “Piante ed Erbe Medicinali della nostra Regione Tridentina”.
Traditional crafts along the Rio dei Molini
The Sentiero dei vecchi mestieri runs through the valley of the Rio dei Molini between Grumes and Grauno. More than 20 water-powered facilities once operated there, including mills, sawmills and forges. The path descends along the Rio dei Molini on a trail and over footbridges. In this way, the route connects the valley landscape with the history of its former crafts.
The Mulino Cristofori was already operating in 1832 and ceased milling after the Second World War. The Fucina Cristofori remained in operation until the 1950s, was restored and is currently functional. The building of the Mulino Nones was also restored and fitted with interior mill equipment.
The return route to Grauno is also relevant when planning the walk: it follows SAT trail 481, climbs about 300 metres and then descends back to the village. Anyone considering the Sentiero dei vecchi mestieri and the return route together should therefore plan for both the downhill path along the Rio dei Molini and the subsequent ascent.
Summits in the surrounding area and destinations for cultural interests

The wider regional surroundings of Grauno include several sites of cultural and historical interest: Castel Thun is a castle, while the Museo Storico in Trento - Castello del Buonconsiglio is a museum. Monte Palace, a palace, and the Provincial Museum of Art, a museum, are also located in this wider regional area. Cultural interests around Grauno therefore range from local mills and the village’s sacred history to regional buildings and museums.
