Stava between remembrance and nature experiences

Stava particularly appeals to travelers who want to get to know a place not only through its landscape, but also through remembrance and history. The Chiesetta della Palanca, the Centro di documentazione di Stava, trails along the Rio Stava and the Sentiero Stava 1985 all contribute to this experience. Arrampicata sportiva Stava also offers an indoor climbing gym. You can therefore shape your stay around culture, a hike, a mountain-bike tour or a sporting activity – without these interests requiring the same daily schedule.

Chiesetta della Palanca and Centro di documentazione

The Chiesetta della Palanca contains a crystal plaque bearing the names of the 268 victims of the Stava disaster. The plaque was blessed on the occasion of Pope John Paul II’s visit to Stava on July 17, 1988. At this site, you therefore encounter a specific testament to remembrance that can be connected with the broader historical perspective on Stava.

The permanent exhibition “La Valle di Stava nelle attività passate” is housed in the Centro di documentazione di Stava. The Centro di documentazione di Stava also displays objects related to mining activities in Prestavel. The two sites are clearly separate: the crystal plaque is located in the Chiesetta della Palanca, while the exhibition and the objects can be viewed in the Centro di documentazione building.

Trails along the Rio Stava

The 3.5-kilometer “Dove Stava una valle” trail leads from Tesero along the Rio Stava. At three points, it crosses the river on footbridges and ends at Centro Stava 1985 after a short detour to the Chiesetta della Palanca. The trail thus combines a route along the water with the Chiesetta della Palanca and Centro Stava 1985. The nature-focused section of the Sentiero Stava 1985 offers insights into forest life and the centuries-old relationship between people, forests and the mountain landscape.

Starting points, duration and loops

The Sentiero Stava 1985 can be started in Stava or at the signposted parking lot. This is located 800 meters after the Pampeago–Lavazè turnoff, on the road to Pampeago, on the left immediately above the bridge over the Rio Stava. From the Chiesetta della Palanca, Centro Stava 1985 can be reached on foot in about 15 minutes; two car parks are located near the Chiesetta. Depending on the route chosen, the Sentiero Stava 1985 offers several routes lasting approximately 1 hour 15 minutes to 4 hours.

The “Dove Stava una valle” trail can be extended back to Tesero via Via dei pianeti and the Osservatorio di Fiemme. Together with the subsequent path to the sports field, it forms a loop of approximately 8 kilometers. From Tesero, Stava can also be reached on the “Dove Stava una valle” trail along the Rio Stava, either on an easy hike or by mountain bike. This provides options for planning both shorter trail sections and a longer loop.

Climbing in Stava

As a complement to the trails, Arrampicata sportiva Stava is an indoor climbing gym. Arrampicata sportiva Stava offers supervision by a mountain guide. In addition to nature-focused and historical experiences, the facility therefore also provides a sporting option with supervision.
