Capolona between the Arno, Pratomagno and historic routes

Capolona lies on the southern slopes of Pratomagno and on the right bank of the Arno. Small streams run through the municipality, flowing down from the southernmost watershed of Pratomagno.

Churches and art around Capolona

Among the prominent historic destinations is the Pieve Santa Maria Maddalena a Sietina. It was built at the beginning of the 11th century along an ancient Roman road. The building has three naves ending in three apses, and its walls feature Gothic and Renaissance frescoes.

The old Pieve San Giovanni also reaches far back into history: its foundation is probably dated to the 5th century. Inside, a 14th-century wooden crucifix is preserved. The cultural setting is complemented by the Pieve San Martino Sopr'Arno, a religious building documented since 1017, and by the Church of Santa Lucia in Cenina. It houses an oil painting from the Tuscan school, dated to the period between the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

Despite later alterations, Bibbiano has preserved a large part of its medieval fortification wall. At the site of Belfiore Castle, a tower, a section of wall and a small corner turret were visible as ruins. In Castelluccio, a single-nave church preserves a wooden depiction of the Madonna and Child. The depiction is surrounded by 15 painted panels showing the Mysteries of the Rosary, from the circle around Vasari and dating from the second half of the 16th century.

Trails through varied landscapes

The Sentiero dei Longobardi is a circular trail in the northern part of the municipality between Il Santo and Lorenzano. Its viewpoints open up views over the lower Casentino and the Arno Valley. A short detour also leads to Castello di Belfiore.

The Sentiero dei Sulpici begins in Pieve San Giovanni and ends at Capolona railway station. The Sentiero dei Sulpici passes through Bibbiano, where the remains of a castle can be seen. Along the trail there are viewpoints over Arezzo and the surrounding hills, the valley of the Salutio stream and the slopes of Pratomagno.

The Sentiero di Sagresto connects Capolona-Subbiano railway station with Capolona railway station. Its route passes through Il Santo, Ponina, Castello di Belfiore and Bibbiano.

Getting there and active excursions

For travel by train, Capolona railway station is located on the Stia–Arezzo line; Smart Tickets can be purchased there. The “La Valle” Bike Park offers ups and downs on very well-maintained trails on the pass between Capolona town centre and the Castelluccio plain.

Local cuisine and a March event

Raviggiolo, a soft cheese typical of this area, is part of the local character. In Capolona, you can also enjoy traditional Tuscan dishes such as crostini with black cabbage and black crostini with liver. The Marzuolo Truffle Fair takes place in Capolona in March.
