Cetica between village history, church art and landscape
Cetica between settlement groups and cultural landscape
Cetica consists of several small, scattered settlement groups along the upper course of the Torrente Solano. The landscape includes stacks of firewood and cultivated terraces. For you, this means that the village does not appear as a single settlement center, but rather as a combination of individual settlement groups and a landscape shaped by local use.
Crafts and everyday history
The Ecomuseum of the Charcoal Maker is housed in the former village school of Cetica, opposite the old Romanesque church of Sant'Angelo. This setting alone brings together two defining aspects of the village: the history of village life and the traditional craft of working with wood and charcoal.
The ecomuseum's green area includes reconstructed charcoal burners' huts and a charcoal kiln pit, created for educational and demonstration purposes. At the Molino del Balenajo, visitors can still learn about the local technique of grinding with stone. At the Scuola dei Nonni, local residents are available to tell their stories, give demonstrations and share experiences from their own lives.
Church art and historical traces
The church of San Michele Arcangelo is also known as San Angelo and probably has Vallombrosan monastic origins; it also displays Romanesque architectural features. Inside is a 15th-century panel depicting the Madonna and Child by Pesellino. The church also preserves a triptych dated 1357, depicting the Madonna, Child and saints, which was recently attributed to the stylistic school of Taddeo Gaddi.
The Castello di S. Angelo is also part of Cetica's history. It was once the seat of the Guidi counts and was destroyed in 1290 by the Florentines on their return from a campaign in the Arezzo area. For visitors interested in culture, this creates a thematic arc from Romanesque architectural features and sacred art to the village's medieval power structures.
Festivals, music and regional cuisine
The ecomuseum's regular events include the potato festival in July, also known as Festa a Cetica. The porcini mushroom festival follows in August or September. Another local tradition is I Vecchioni: the New Year is welcomed with songs, jumps and dances, accompanied by accordion, mandolin and guitar.
The Patata Rossa di Cetica is closely associated with the local area and is suitable for traditional dishes such as tortelli and gnocchi. The festivals and regional specialty thus complement the craft-related themes of the ecomuseum and the Molino del Balenajo with a culinary dimension.
Meadows, forests and excursions
Bagno di Cetica lies in a small valley with natural meadows between beech and chestnut woodland. From Bagno di Cetica, visitors can reach the extensive summit meadows of Pratomagno, which are considered a destination for excursions. Cetica's thematic range includes church art, crafts, local festivals and surroundings shaped by forests and meadows.
The ecomuseum with its reconstructed charcoal burners' huts, the Scuola dei Nonni and the Molino del Balenajo represent a vivid history of the village. San Michele Arcangelo and the Castello di S. Angelo point to older religious and political traces, while Pratomagno, Bagno di Cetica and the cultivated terraces form the landscape setting.
