Corezzo in the Mountain Landscape of the Foreste Casentinesi

Corezzo lies at an altitude of around 760 metres above sea level in the heart of the Foreste Casentinesi. The old mountain village is situated among meadows, small woods and gardens in an appealing, impressive mountain landscape. This gives the village a combination of peaceful scenery and a remarkable density of trails, local traditions and small cultural traces.

The location along two important connections is of interest for orientation in the region: Corezzo lies on the road connecting Chiusi della Verna and Badia Prataglia through the valley of the Torrente Corsalone, and at the same time on the road between the Monastero di Camaldoli and the Santuario della Verna. Those choosing accommodation for a stay in this mountain landscape can therefore consider Corezzo from the perspectives of nature experiences, local culture and culinary occasions.

Hiking Trails around the Old Mountain Village

CAI Trail No. 59 runs through Corezzo. From here, it leads west to the hamlet of Frassineta and east to the hamlet of Serra. The trail also leads over the Passo di Serra to Bagno di Romagna. Another CAI trail, No. 56, connects with the GEA route below Poggio Magiovanna.

Another option is Trek 17, a circular hike designated by the National Park starting from Corezzo. On the outward route, it passes through Frassineta and Santicchio, and on the return route through Serra. The landscape along this loop includes open valley areas, old fields and pastures, open oak woods and hazelnut groves. The different landscape areas make the trail an illustrative link between cultivated landscapes and woodland.

The Via Romea Germanica also shapes the village’s network of trails. It leads from Corezzo to the village of Frassineta along a mule track. The old mountain village of Corezzo can also be reached via a historic route of the Via Romea Germanica. This allows you to consider both circular hikes and linear trail sections as well as historic routes when planning, without reducing the village to just one way of getting around.

History, the Ecomuseo and Local Stories

Corezzo is part of the Ecomuseo della Vallesanta. An ancient Medici coat of arms can still be seen on the wall of a building on the main piazza. The “Stanza dei ricordi e delle sapienze manuali” museum was also established in the school of Corezzo. It is dedicated to research and practical projects in the field of encounters and workshops.

Local tradition includes the “Badalischio”, a mythical and legendary figure. In Vallesanta, reported apparitions attributed to it include those at Campo di Gostinello in Corezzo. The “Cantamaggio della Vallesanta” is organised in the first days of May by the children of the Corezzo school and adds a communal custom to the village’s cultural traditions.

Tortello alla Lastra and Village Festivals

Tortello alla Lastra® is a typical gastronomic specialty of the mountains between Romagna and Tuscany. To prepare it, the dough is worked exclusively by hand and rolled out with a rolling pin into a thin sheet. Potato filling is spread over one half of it; the filled Tortello alla Lastra® is then cooked on a slab of pietra serena.

The Sagra del Tortello alla Lastra is the most important event organised by Pro Loco Corezzo. The Festa del Tortello alla Lastra takes place every year in August in Corezzo and began in 1995 with six tables in the village square. During the Festa, the Mercatale della Vallesanta in Corezzo also takes place on 12, 13 and 14 August. Thus, in Corezzo, hiking trails, mountain landscapes, local history and a clearly recognisable culinary tradition come together directly.
