Colcellalto is one of the old settlements that preserve historical and artistic memories. The village lies on the road between Sestino and Badia Tedalda. From Sestino, old paths lead to the discovery of Colcellalto.

Church, Terracotta and Historical Traces in Colcellalto

The Chiesa dei Santi Tommaso e Leone in Colcellalto is a parish church. Its terracotta artwork depicts the Trinity as well as Saints Sebastian and Anthony the Abbot and dates from the 16th century. Those interested in culture will find here a religious subject alongside a clearly dated work.

Until 1775, Colcellalto was a municipality to which Pieve ai Palazzi belonged. In 1775, Colcellalto was incorporated into the newly established municipality of Sestino. Colcellalto was also one of the 72 possessions confirmed to Neri di Uguccione della Faggiuola in the Peace of Sarzana of 1353.

The new cemetery of Colcellalto is associated with 8 March 1789. On that day, the first person was buried there.

Old Paths, Nature Trails and Waterways of the Valtiberina

CAI Trail 17 runs along the old road to the cemetery.

A nature trail reaches Colcellalto at Passo Pretella within the Sasso di Simone Regional Nature Reserve. Another nature trail section leads from Badia Tedalda via the Castello towards Palazzi and on to Colcellalto; it is connected with CAI Trails 17 and 65. For route planning, these connections differ in that one links to the nature reserve, while the other follows the route via Badia Tedalda, Castello and Palazzi.

On a four-day route through the Valtiberina, Colcellalto is included on the fourth day in the Sestino section. Colcellalto lies at the source of the Fosso Fiumicino. This flows into the Pressale and subsequently into the Marecchia.

Cenavecchi, the Cult of the Dead and Local Events in Colcellalto

The Cenavecchi take place every year after the Christmas period, from 6 to 9 January, and begin at sunset. The Cenavecchi prayer procession takes place at the houses in Colcellalto. The Cenavecchi probably began towards the end of the 18th century; they are closely connected with the cult of the dead.

The two events take place in different seasons: the Cenavecchi are held in January, while the Festa della Madonna is scheduled for 4 July. The start at sunset is part of the timing of the Cenavecchi.
