Oliveto between Village Walls and Hilly Landscape

Oliveto combines a medieval-style historic centre with a rural Tuscan landscape. Gentle hills, vineyards and olive groves define the setting; at the same time, the village preserves its original circular shape with two gates. Outside the walls, Via delle Scuole connects the two gates in a semicircle. A Historic Village with a Layered Memory

Villa Oliveto carries a significant historical memory. During the Second World War, it served as a concentration camp for Jews. The municipality designated the villa as the site of a documentation centre about concentration camps. A Walk through the Medieval Historic Centre

Visible sections of the town walls can be seen, among other places, at the Cassero, which once defended the northern gate. Immediately outside the town walls lies the Tabernacolo della Madonnina; in the 19th century, it was converted into a small chapel. An unpaved but easily navigable road leads towards the medieval historic centre.

Churches and Small Sacred Buildings

The religious architecture includes Sant'Andrea, San Giovanni di Oliveto and the Church of the Compagnia. Sant'Andrea probably dates from before the 14th century and was incorporated into the Pieve di Santa Maria al Toppo in the 15th century. The chapel of the Church of the Compagnia was renovated in the 17th century. San Giovanni di Oliveto is also one of the village's significant religious buildings.

Villa Oliveto: Building, Park and Location

Villa Oliveto stands immediately outside the town walls, on the slopes descending from Civitella towards Valdichiana. The present building probably originated from the conversion of an earlier agricultural building in the 19th century. It comprises a piano nobile, meaning a principal floor, above it a service floor, as well as rooms for an oil mill and cellar rooms on the lower levels. The villa is surrounded by a romantic-style park with notable cedars and holm oaks. A winding path leads from the main façade downwards across terraces planted with olive trees.

The village of Oliveto is also associated with Il Presepe Vivente di Oliveto, featuring depictions of rural life and traditional crafts. Since 2014, new stage sets and scenes have been added to this living nativity each year.
