Monterchi between Art and Local History
Monterchi combines important works of art with visible traces of its local history. The Museo delle Bilance is located in Palazzo Massi. The building itself was constructed around the 16th century, as indicated by the rusticated decorations on the windows and the monumental entrance portal. The palazzo is therefore also a specific point of interest for those interested in art and architecture: its architectural forms point to the Renaissance period, while the museum has its own thematic focus.
Frescoes and Sacred Art
During restoration work, several frescoes re-emerged in the Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo. They include San Cristoforo with the Child, dating from around 1552, San Sebastiano and San Macario from 1485, and San Martino from between 1525 and 1530. The different dates make it clear that artworks from several historical periods have been preserved in this church.
The Chiesa di San Simeone also preserves noteworthy works of art. It houses a polychrome terracotta figure of the Madonna and Child by Benedetto Buglioni, dating from around 1520. It is complemented by three stone bas-reliefs from the 15th century. The Madonna del Parto fresco is dated to the period between 1450 and 1465. The possible places of origin are the Chiesa di Santa Maria di Momentana or Santa Maria in Silvis.
Medieval Traces in the Town
The Torre Civica in Monterchi has medieval origins and was rebuilt after the earthquake. Together with the Benedictine convent attached to San Benedetto, it points to the town’s long religious and architectural development. According to tradition, the convent was founded in the 10th century by San Romualdo.
Parco fluviale on the Torrente Cerfone
The municipal Parco fluviale lies at the foot of the hill of Monterchi on the Torrente Cerfone. The park includes a children’s play area, picnic and barbecue areas, as well as a football pitch and a volleyball court. This specific location therefore offers various opportunities for a break outdoors: families will find a play area, while the picnic and barbecue areas shape the experience in the open air. The two sports facilities complement the offering with communal activities.
Polenta and the Local Calendar
In Monterchi, the Sagra della Polenta is a traditional food festival centred around polenta. It takes place every year on the penultimate Sunday in September.
