Talla between Historic Routes and Vibrant Village Culture

Routes through the Talla Area

For hiking, cycling, and horseback riding, the Via dei Ponti Antichi Nord-Süd is an appealing option. The route there and back is 14.2 kilometers long. A longer option is the Gran Tour: The circular route covers 29.9 kilometers and can be used for hiking, cycling, and horseback riding. It encompasses almost the entire municipality of Talla and runs on natural surfaces for approximately 95 percent of its length. The different distances and route types make it easier to plan your days according to the amount of activity you want.

The Gran Tour starts and ends at Piazza Licio Nencetti in the center of Talla. There is an e-bike charging station near the fountain. The piazza can therefore also serve as a practical point of reference when choosing accommodation and planning your day. Original stone paving is visible along the Via dei Ponti Antichi Nord-Süd, particularly near the Ponte di Annibale and between Pontenano and Passo della Crocina. The medieval Ponte di Sasso on this route has been preserved and can be crossed on foot.

La Castellaccia and Guido Monaco

The medieval village of La Castellaccia, the old town center, lies in the upper part of Talla. The Casa natale di Guido Monaco is located there in a 10th-century building. Guido Monaco was born in this house between 992 and 995. He is regarded as the inventor of musical notation, giving the village a special connection to European music history.

The exhibition at the Casa natale di Guido Monaco includes instruments and illuminated codices from the La Verna monastery. The Casa can be visited by prior reservation. This reservation is therefore an important part of planning your visit. Piazza Licio Nencetti is also home to the Church of San Niccolò. It was built in 1644 by the Compagnia del Sacramento and adds a tangible example of local sacred architecture to the historic townscape.

Festivals and Specialties from Talla

Local culture is also reflected in events and culinary traditions. The Sagra del cacio e dei baccelli takes place every year during the first days of May. Local chestnut-based specialties include Ballotte or Baloci, Tigliate, and sweet polenta. These names represent a cuisine in which regional ingredients and traditional preparation methods play a visible role.

The Corsa del Saracino di Talla is a medieval event that originated in Talla in the second half of the 18th century. It is associated with the Sagra del dolce casalingo, a festival of homemade sweets. The Corsa del Saracino di Talla takes place on the third Sunday in September.
