Sagginale between the Sieve Route, Tortello and Cultural Heritage

Sagginale between river landscape and culture

Sagginale is a small hamlet of Borgo San Lorenzo. The area offers you three different ways to explore it: an ecotourism route along the Sieve, the traditional Sagra del Tortello and the Chiesa della Sacra Famiglia, with its clear architectural details and historic works of art.

Along the Sieve

The ecotourism route along the Sieve River crosses the Ponte di Annibale in Sagginale and then continues along the old municipal road towards Vicchio. In the section near Sagginale, it follows the riverside path around the Sieve loop and crosses several streams via wooden footbridges. You can use the route on foot, by city bike or by mountain bike. This allows you to adapt this part of your travel plans to your preferred mode of transport.

Tortelli from Mugello

The traditional Sagra del Tortello takes place on the Sagginale sports field. The event offers traditional Tortelli from Mugello, as well as steaks and mixed grilled dishes. If you would like to discover regional cuisine through a specific event, the Sagra combines typical specialities with other grilled dishes.

The Chiesa della Sacra Famiglia

The present-day Chiesa della Sacra Famiglia a Sagginale was built in 2015 to a design by the architect Giuseppe Ulivi. Its rectangular, gabled form is clad in brick and Cotto; the east wall is made of roughly worked stone. Inside, there is a large onyx wall in the apse, as well as a small altar made of Pietra serena.

The furnishings also include a tabernacle dated 1528, from the late period of Giovanni della Robbia's workshop. The church also contains a marble sculpture of the Holy Family by Enrico Savelli. Thus, a building dating from 2015 brings together contemporary design elements and older sacred art.

A hamlet with its own history

Until the 1960s, Sagginale had no church, only a chapel. This had developed from a hospice for travellers dedicated to Saint Blaise, located at the bridge over the Sieve. The history of the place is therefore directly connected with an earlier religious institution and the crossing over the river.

Mountains, museums and palaces in the surrounding area

Monte Veruca and Il Pratone are mountains in the area around Sagginale. Monte Gazzaro and Monte Falterona are mountains in the wider regional area surrounding Sagginale. Also located in the wider regional area are the Museo Bandini and Museo Stibbert, as museums, and Villa Medici at Careggi and Villa Guicciardini Corsi Salviati, as palaces.

The right accommodation perspective

If you are looking for a hotel for your stay in Sagginale, you can decide on the focus of your trip in advance: the Sieve Route, regional cuisine or the architectural and art-historical themes of the Chiesa della Sacra Famiglia.
