Batignano is connected to two Cammino sections with different difficulty ratings, while also featuring a historic village center full of details. Historic Traces in the Village Center

Batignano is home to the Pieve di San Martino, built in the 12th century from reused Roman and early medieval materials taken from buildings in nearby Roselle. During a Holy Year, the church served as a Holy Door of Mercy. Its architectural history thus directly reflects the long-standing connection between the village and nearby Roselle.

At the end of Via di Mezzo, there is a loggia with three arches. It features reused Roman columns and capitals, probably originating from Roselle.

Two Different Trail Profiles

The first stage of the Cammino di Padre Giovanni connects Grosseto with Batignano. It is 14.2 km long and rated easy. If you would like to include a hike with a clearly defined distance and an easy rating in your travel plans, this section provides a clearly distinguishable framework.

The variant of the Cammino degli Etruschi is different: on the section from Batignano to Sticciano Scalo, there is a 13.6 km-long, rather demanding variant of the Cammino degli Etruschi leading to Sticciano. Compared with the easy first stage of the Cammino di Padre Giovanni, this involves a different level of difficulty. The two details help you take your preferred hiking intensity into account when choosing where to stay.

Historic Sites in the Surrounding Area

The ancient site of Rovine di Roselle lies in the immediate surroundings of Batignano. The area also includes the historic site of Tino di Moscona, the historic site of Terme Leopoldine, and the Villa Ricasoli palace. These places complement the historic village center with further specific destinations in the surrounding area, without reducing Batignano’s history to a single era or a single building.

Mountains Nearby and Further Afield

The mountains also give the area around Batignano a spatial structure. Monte Leoni, a mountain, lies in the immediate surroundings of Batignano. Monte Verdi, also a mountain, lies in the area around the village. Further away in the wider regional surroundings are Poggio della Rustica, a mountain, and Monte Vecchio, also a mountain.
