Fortress Settlement on the Rock

Rocchette di Fazio lies on a rocky spur above the Albegna River and was considered an important fortress because of its strategically defensive position. The stone houses stand on the crest of high limestone cliffs above the Albegna.

Walls, Towers and Rocca Aldobrandesca

Rocchette di Fazio was first mentioned in 1216 as a “castrum” under the name Rocchetta. The defensive walls were built in the 13th century by the Aldobrandeschi to protect the old Aldobrandeschi castle. The hexagonal ring of walls has two round-arched entrances; one of them is called Porta del Castello.

Five towers are still preserved along the walls. The tallest belongs to Rocca Aldobrandesca, which was completely rebuilt by Siena in the 15th century. Those interested in the development of medieval settlements and their visible architectural structures will find several details here within a compact thematic area: the ring of walls, gates, towers and castle complex can be viewed as interconnected historical elements.

Santa Cristina and Living Tradition

The religious buildings also contribute to Rocchette’s history. A Templar cross is visible above the portal of the Pieve di Santa Cristina, while a rose window is located in the upper part of the façade. The church of Santa Cristina contains frescoes from the year 1400. Every April, Rocchette also renews a folk tradition featuring competitions in improvised singing, associated with the poet Tribuno Tonini.

Hiking Trails with Historical Connections

The Sentiero del Parco is a moderately difficult walking trail about 3 kilometres long, with an elevation difference of about 200 metres. The Bellafreddi Trail begins in Rocchette di Fazio and passes a fountain that Leopold of Lorraine had restored in the 18th century.

The Bellafreddi Trail is designed as a moderately difficult circular route approximately 3 kilometres long, with an elevation difference of about 270 metres. Its route includes a preserved section of the old road paving of the Strada del Sale. The route is marked in red. From Pozzo Diavolo, you can follow the Albegna to reach the entrance to the Sentiero del Parco, thereby creating a larger circular route. This makes it possible to combine historic traces of the road with the riverside landscape on a longer hike.

Cycling Route and Wide-Ranging Views

There is also a specific option for gravel and MTB bicycles: an approximately 40-kilometre route reaches Rocchette di Fazio after an ascent of about three kilometres. From Rocca Aldobrandesca, on a clear day, the view extends from Monte Amiata to Argentario.

Mountains, Ruins and Historic Places in the Surrounding Area

Several mountains lie around Rocchette: Monte Faete, Poggio Brunorio, Poggi Alti and Monte Labbro. The Castello di Cotone, a ruin, is also located nearby. In the wider regional surroundings of Rocchette are Vitozza, an ancient site, San Bruzio, a ruin, and the Abbazia di San Salvatore, a monastery. These different categories of places—mountain, ruin, ancient site and monastery—expand the historical and landscape context around Rocchette.
