Roccastrada between rock, panoramic views and history

Roccastrada lies on a base of igneous rock and offers expansive panoramic views of the surrounding plain; on the other side, Monte Amiata rises into view. The western and northern slopes of Roccastrada were naturally protected by steep trachyte rock walls more than 20 metres high. Historical traces in the town centre

In the historic centre of Roccastrada, the Chiesa di San Niccolò preserves a building shaped by several periods. It was probably founded in the 11th century; its significant medieval structures apparently point to major renovation work in the 13th century. Remains of 12th-century residential buildings can also be found in the Vicolo della Contessa Giovanna. The Porta del Madonnino is Roccastrada’s medieval town gate and lies to the southwest between the Vicolo Basso and the Piazzetta dell’Incrociata.

The history of mining is also part of the townscape. In the Middle Ages, Roccastrada was an important centre of silver and copper mining. The Teatro dei Concordi

Another historical facet is represented by the Teatro dei Concordi, which opened in 1872. Hiking between the Farma and the ridges

The Trekking Roccastrada route runs through the immediate hinterland of the Grosseto Maremma and extends into the Val di Farma. Other sections run along streams or over ridges and reach elevations of up to 800 metres at Monte Alto and Sassoforte. This landscape therefore offers you different perspectives on waterways, wooded or rocky terrain and higher viewpoints. The route connects the area around Roccastrada with the Val di Farma, without turning the individual trails into one uniform type of route.

The springs of Roccastrada can be explored around the town. In addition, the Strada del vino Monteregio wine route passes through Roccastrada. The springs and the wine route offer two different focal points: the former lead to the water sources around the town, while the latter connects Roccastrada with the region’s wine culture. Together with the panoramic views, historic buildings and trails into the Val di Farma, they create a varied picture for travellers who want to combine landscape, history and local themes.
