Bolgheri: Wine, History and Different Travel Interests

Bolgheri combines a distinctive road, historical connections, winemaking, nature observation and sporting experiences. This allows you to discover the town according to your own interests and focus on different aspects of culture, landscapes, food and wine, and physical activity.

A Road with a Clear Historical Connection

The Viale dei Cipressi di Bolgheri is a five-kilometre tree-lined road. It connects the Oratorio di San Guido with the historic centre of Bolgheri. The entire length of the road can be driven by car; parking is available at both ends. This distinctive stretch can therefore be appreciated both as a landscape feature and as a practical point of orientation in the town.

Bolgheri's history also includes the Castello di Bolgheri and its connection with Giosuè Carducci. The origins of the Castello di Bolgheri date back to the 13th century. Giosuè Carducci spent part of his childhood in Bolgheri.

Winemaking and Bolgherese Culture

The wine landscape has its own distinctive character. The Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC became an independent denominazione in 2013. The production area of the Bolgheri DOC corresponds to the administrative boundaries of the municipality of Castagneto Carducci in the province of Livorno, excluding the coastal strip west of the Via Aurelia.

Grape varieties of Bordeaux origin are grown in the Bolgheri area, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. In September, Bolgheri becomes the stage for Bolgheri Jazz, a combination of jazz and wine featuring the area's leading wineries and numerous jazz bands from all over Italy. Wine and culture therefore appear here in different forms: as a clearly defined production area, as a diversity of grape varieties and as a seasonal event format.

Nature Observation and Routes

The Padule di Bolgheri is crossed by walkable embankments leading to observation hides; there is also an observation tower at the beginning of the path. For views of the landscape, the Belvedere di Bolgheri offers a panorama of the sea and the surrounding landscape. The two places offer different experiences: at the Padule, the focus is on moving through the area to the observation points, while at the Belvedere, it is on looking out over the surrounding area.

The “Tra Castagneto Carducci e Bolgheri” route is a 44-kilometre circular course for gravel and MTB bikes. Together with the five-kilometre road, these figures indicate different scales for planning your days and routes, without implying that they form a shared route.
