Historic townscapes, regional cuisine, wine and nature observation characterize Castagneto Carducci.
Historic Centre and Cultural Traces
The historic centre of Castagneto Carducci developed around the Castello dei Della Gherardesca, which was built around the year 1000. Cobblestone lanes and natural terraces overlooking the sea and the countryside characterize the townscape. Gardens and access paths are located along the walls of the Castello della Gherardesca. The Chiesa di S. Lorenzo belongs to the Castello dei conti Della Gherardesca.
The places in the centre include the Piazzetta della Gogna. Its name recalls the former public display of citizens in this square; today, the piazzetta hosts concerts and cultural events. The Teatro Roma was built in 1846 as the centre of local cultural life. The Museo di Arte Sacra di Castagneto Carducci is located in the Chiesa della Madonna Del Carmine, while the church of Santissimo Crocifisso in the borgo is known for a famous wooden crucifix from the 15th century.
The Museo Archivio Giosuè Carducci displays books and periodicals containing editions of Carducci’s works, photographs of people and places from his circle, as well as drafts of poems relating to the region. Exhibition panels trace the main stages of his literary work, which was closely connected with the scents, sounds and landscapes of the Maremma pisana. Giosuè Carducci spent part of his childhood in Castagneto and Bolgheri. The museum entrance is at street level and is also accessible to people with disabilities.
Bolgheri, Cypresses and Wine Country
The Viale dei Cipressi di Bolgheri is a five-kilometre tree-lined road. It connects the Oratorio di San Guido with the historic centre of the borgo of Bolgheri. The entire road can be travelled by car; parking is available at both ends. The Strada del Vino runs along the Bolgherese, the SP16 provincial road, and leads to the municipality of Castagneto Carducci.
Numerous wineries in the Castagneto Carducci area organize tastings of Ornellaia, Sassicaia and Masseto. The area also produces fruity extra virgin olive oil. Traditional dishes include roast venison, hare in salmì and Colombaccio al “pentolo”. The Castagneto a Tavola food and wine event takes place every year in spring in Castagneto Carducci and offers wine tastings, themed dinners, tasting workshops and guided visits to wineries.
Wetland and Nature Trails
The Padule di Bolgheri is a Special Protection Area and a bird protection area with the Natura 2000 code IT5160004. Since 1977, it has also been a Ramsar wetland of international importance. The Padule di Bolgheri wildlife refuge was established in 1968, covers 500 hectares and lies on the northern boundary of the municipality of Castagneto Carducci between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Grosseto–Livorno railway line.
In the municipal area of Castagneto Carducci, walkable embankments lead through the Padule di Bolgheri to observation hides. From there, wildlife can be observed without disturbing it. Within the municipality of San Vincenzo, a hiking trail connects after approximately 300 m with trails no. 3 and 4 of the municipality of Castagneto Carducci and leads to the access point for the integrated trails of the municipalities of San Vincenzo, Castagneto C.cci, Sassetta and Campiglia M.ma.
During the Etrusca Ciclostorica, historic cycling enthusiasts cross the vineyards of Castagneto Carducci in spring.
