Capo d'Arco between Beach and Coastal Landscape

Capo d'Arco combines a distinctive coastline with trails and traces of history. Spiaggia Capo d'Arco beach has a fine gravel shore. The wider section of Capo d'Arco beach is called del Coccodrillo because a rock there resembles a crocodile. At Capo d'Arco beach, the fine gravel shore of Spiaggia Capo d'Arco and the striking rock formation of the del Coccodrillo section thus meet.

Several other beaches are located in the immediate vicinity of Capo d'Arco. These include Terranera, Spiaggia di Ortano, Spiaggia Di Barbarossa and Spiaggia di Naregno. Serpentinite, the Rio Marina Formation, the Verrucano Formation and the Calcare Cavernoso crop out between Spiaggia di Reale and Capo d'Arco. These references remain spatially distinct for coastal planning: the beaches are located in the immediate vicinity of Capo d'Arco, while the rock formations crop out between Spiaggia di Reale and Capo d'Arco.

Trails for Walks and Bike Rides

A private road in the Capo d'Arco area is part of the CAI Sentiero 200 trail and is accessible to everyone on foot; vehicle traffic, however, is restricted to residents and those accessing properties. Anyone planning to use Sentiero 200 as a footpath must therefore distinguish it from a general road access for cars. A circular hike was conducted or begun in the protected Monte Arco area.

A cycling route also includes Capo d'Arco in its course. The Coda del Pesce MTB cycling route runs from Porto Azzurro to Cavo and turns back toward Porto Azzurro at the exit from Capo d'Arco. For orientation by bike, the Porto Azzurro–Cavo sequence and the return direction at the exit from Capo d'Arco are therefore established.

Castle, Fortress and Traces of the Past

Historic sites in the immediate vicinity of Capo d'Arco include Castello del Volterraio, a castle, and Forte Focardo, a fortress. The ruins of Ruderi di Villa Romana are also located in the vicinity of Capo d'Arco. Another destination in the vicinity of Capo d'Arco is the Museo Nazionale Delle Residenze Napoleoniche, a museum.

There were mines for oligist iron ore on Monte d'Arco. Along with the historic buildings and ruins, the former mining use of Monte d'Arco is therefore also part of the area's history.

Access to the Beach

Access to Capo d'Arco beach by land is reserved for guests of the local residences and tourist facilities that authorize entry. For a beach visit by land, authorization from the local residences or tourist facilities is therefore the decisive practical point.

The MTB cycling route also continues as far as Cavo; the town is thus linked as another reference point in the route described.
