Nisporto: Beach, Trails and History by the Sea

Nisporto lies west of Rio nell'Elba in a narrow, horseshoe-shaped bay at the end of a small valley. This valley slopes down from Monte Capannello to the sea. The location combines a coastal setting with trails leading to nearby Nisportino and traces of a rich local history. The place name Nisporto is documented in the cartography of Giovanni Antonio Magini from 1598 as “Disporto Grande”.

Nisporto Bay and Beach

Nisporto Beach faces north. It is protected by Punta di Nisporto to the west and Poggio La Guardia to the east. This creates a clearly identifiable geographical focal point for your stay: the beach serves as the reference point for swimming, activities exploring the sea and various practical amenities on site.

Pedal boats and small boats are available for hire on the beach. There are also bars and restaurants. Several car parks are available along the road to the beach. Those who wish to combine swimming with exploring the sea can use the pedal boats or small boats available for hire on the beach.

Hiking Trails to Nisportino

Hiking trail 201 leads to Nisporto Beach. The circular trail near Nisportino, on the other hand, begins and ends at Nisportino Beach. From Nisporto, this circular trail can be reached via a paved road. When navigating on foot, you should therefore distinguish between the two beach names.

Kestrels and peregrine falcons breed on the nearby cliffs that drop steeply into the sea along the Nisportino route. The route therefore passes through a section of landscape where views of the steep cliffs are connected with a specific natural feature. For nature enthusiasts, this connection is just as significant as the course of the trail itself.

The Fornace della Ballerina

On the left side of Nisporto Beach are the remains of an old kiln made of stone and red bricks, known as “della Ballerina”. The Fornace della Ballerina has been classified by the Soprintendenza as a building of historical and artistic interest. In addition to its seaside setting, the site therefore has a clearly identifiable historical connection.

Lime and bricks were produced in the Fornace della Ballerina. These products were then transported to Portoferraio by rowing boats. The history of the kiln is thus directly connected with the use of the sea as a transport route.

An Event on 10 August

Every year on 10 August, a reenactment of the love story of the “Prince” and the Ballerina of Nisporto takes place on Nisporto Beach. If you would like to plan your trip around a specific date, 10 August is therefore one of the special dates in Nisporto.
