Rio Nell'elba Between Alleys and Island Nature

Rio Nell'elba reveals its character through a typical medieval settlement structure: narrow, winding alleys lead into small, distinctive squares. This sequence makes the historic character of the village an immediate focus of a stay. When choosing a hotel or other accommodation, you can therefore consider Rio Nell'elba according to the cultural and natural-history interests that should shape your trip.

Historical Traces in the Townscape

The Eremo di Santa Caterina probably dates from the Romanesque period and was expanded and redesigned in 1634. It stands on the remains of a hilltop fortress built by the Phoenicians in the 6th century BC. A festival is traditionally associated with the Eremo and is celebrated every year on the Monday after Easter. Il Lavatoio historically served both for washing one's own clothes and as a social meeting place.

The area's older water management is also part of its history: a water-rich stream flowing near Rio Nell'elba powered numerous watermills until the 19th century.

Plant Life in the National Park

The Orto dei Semplici Elbano is located in Rio Nell'elba, a district of the municipality of Rio on the island of Elba, in the heart of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park. The approximately one-hectare site is near the Eremo di Santa Caterina and was established in 1997 to study the plant biodiversity of Elba and the other islands of the Tuscan Archipelago.

Explanatory panels in the Orto dei Semplici Elbano provide information about the plant species collected, their characteristics and their traditional medicinal and culinary uses. This gives visitors interested in natural history a concrete way to learn about the plants of the island world.

Museum and Casa del Parco

The Museo civico archeologico del Distretto minerario di Rio Nell'elba presents the history of eastern Elba, where the mineral deposits are concentrated. The focus is on metallurgical activities from the earliest known evidence through the late Middle Ages. Throughout the year, guided tours, lectures, exhibitions and workshops for children are organized there.

The Casa del Parco is an old laundry in the center of Rio Nell'elba, in Loc. I Canali. It covers approximately 65 square meters and serves as a visitor center as well as the park's point of contact and reception facility. The Casa del Parco is dedicated to Elba's eastern slope and its mining traditions.

Getting Around by Bus or Bicycle

As part of the Elba Pass, the municipality of Rio promotes urban and intercity buses on Elba as a sustainable way to travel around the island. The “La Via del Mare” cycling tour reaches Rio Nell'elba; afterwards, a 3-kilometer ascent begins, with an average gradient of around 8%. The “Elba: exploring the north-eastern side” cycling tour passes near the Eremo di Santa Caterina.

When choosing accommodation in Rio Nell'elba, you can therefore sort by the interests that should determine your stay: historic alleys and squares, the Eremo di Santa Caterina, plant life, mining history or cycling.
