Pedona: Elevation and Views across Versilia

Pedona is located in the hills above Camaiore at an elevation of 309 metres. From here, the view stretches across the Versilia plain to the sea. In clear weather, the horizon extends from Livorno to La Spezia. Camaiore remains the direct local reference, while the Versilia plain and the sea define the view towards the coast. The Castle as the Village Layout

The village’s circular structure dates back to the castle of the Nobili Flammi from the 11th century. This castle included a round tower and massive walls. Traces of the former walls and some original buildings are visible in front of the village church. The historical connection with Camaiore in the context of the castle ring is therefore limited to the 11th and 12th centuries.

The original church of Pedona was built in the 13th century, while the church of San Iacopo acquired its present form between 1923 and 1924. San Iacopo’s present form therefore belongs to a later construction phase than the original church. The church dedicated to Saint Maurizio was originally located within the castle and was later rebuilt outside the walls. The Chapel of San Maurizio in Pedona is considered a subsidiary or branch chapel and an example of architectural heritage. Historic Trails between Pedona and Camaiore

The Monte Moneta–Capanne trail is an old mule track with scenic views. For route planning, the local references are clearly distinct: the “Scesa” leads downhill from the cemetery in Pedona to Camaiore, while Route 10 runs from Camaiore via Pedona and back to Camaiore. The Camaiore–Pedona–Camaiore Route 10 is part of the Camaiore Antiqua project to restore historic trails. For this route, the starting and return point are already included in the Camaiore–Pedona–Camaiore itinerary. FrancigenAmica is a recurring outdoor event organised by SEI Versilia ASD and the Municipality of Camaiore, and it also includes trails from Camaiore Antiqua.
