Camaiore between History and Coast

Camaiore can be viewed from several perspectives for a trip to Italy. Archaeological, sacred and architectural heritage is prominent in Camaiore; Lido di Camaiore complements this local setting with a fine-sand beach. The Via Francigena passes through the centre, while the Grotta all’Onda near Casoli reveals a natural-history aspect of the landscape on Monte Matanna.

Archaeology, Theatre and Sacred Art

The Civico Museo Archeologico presents archaeological evidence from the area in 13 rooms, dating from prehistory to the Renaissance. The tour is educational and interactive. Free audio guides are available in Italian and English. The museum is accessible to visitors with mobility impairments; access for people with sensory or cognitive disabilities is possible by prior reservation.

Porta Lombricese is the only surviving gate in Camaiore’s city walls. One of its façades bears an 18th-century image of the Virgin Mary. The Teatro dell’Olivo was created by converting a wool-processing facility built in 1565, transformed into a theatre in 1649 and finally reopened in 2003. The Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta preserves a marble baptismal font from the 14th century. Porta Lombricese and the Teatro dell’Olivo complement the sacred heritage with the history of the city walls and theatre.

The Museo d’Arte Sacra di Camaiore also displays paintings, sacred goldsmith’s work, furnishings and liturgical vestments dating from the 14th to the 16th century. The Badia di San Pietro was founded by Benedictine monks in the 7th century. Every summer, it hosts the annual Festival Organistico Internazionale Città di Camaiore, centred on the organ dating from the 17th century. Sacred art here ranges from museum collections to the organ of the Badia di San Pietro.

Beach, Pilgrimage Route and Landscape

Lido di Camaiore has more than four kilometres of fine-sand beach and has been a seaside resort since the beginning of the 20th century. The Via Francigena runs through the centre of Camaiore: Stage 26 leads here from Massa, while Stage 27 continues on to Lucca. For pilgrims, the route through Camaiore points in both directions: onwards from Massa to Lucca.

Nature and the Local Annual Cycle

The Grotta all’Onda is a prehistoric karst cave in the hamlet of Casoli near Camaiore. It can be reached via a CAI trail through the oak forests of Monte Matanna. The path through the oak forests gives the cave a landscape setting on Monte Matanna. Every June, the Corpus Domini procession takes place in Camaiore. During it, sawdust carpets made by artisans, called pula in Camaiorese, decorate the historic centre and reach lengths of up to 40 metres. The term pula refers to the carpets themselves, not to the procession.
