Vorno: Chiuse, Pieve and Observatory

Vorno lies at the foot of Monte Pisano in the green valley of the stream of the same name. When planning your trip, the landscape, culture and selected events come together here to create a variety of experiences. These include paths between villas, historic architectural sites, the Tenuta Dello Scompiglio and astronomy evenings.

Landscape, Villas and Chiuse

In the hills of Vorno, the Tenuta Dello Scompiglio covers 50 hectares. The estate includes a centuries-old park with a villa, landscaped areas, agricultural land and renovated farmhouses. As a result, you encounter not only individual buildings here, but also areas with different characteristics within an extensive estate.

The characteristic Chiuse are also part of Vorno's townscape. They were created between the 16th and 17th centuries. A Chiusa is a clearly defined area enclosed by stone walls, with the villa at its centre. This distinctive combination of wall, grounds and villa explains the unique appearance of these properties.

Pieve di San Pietro and Paths Between Villas

The Pieve di San Pietro in Vorno was first documented in 867. It preserves a capital attributed to the school of Beduino and the columns of the central nave of the 12th-century building. For visitors interested in cultural history, this is where an early-documented church and architectural elements from the 12th century come together.

For outdoor activity, the walking route between the villas of Vorno is a good option. It is 5 to 6 kilometres long and offers several short optional detours. The stated range helps you realistically assess the length of the route and take the additional detours into account when planning your day.

Astronomy Evenings on Monte della Gallonzora

Another point of interest is the Osservatorio Astronomico di Capannori. Admission is free, but reservations are mandatory. Reservations are only possible for dates listed among the upcoming events. The visit is therefore tied to a specific event date.

During the public event evenings, telescope observations and a guided tour take place there when weather conditions are suitable. The evening thus combines an astronomy programme with the explanations provided during the tour.

From the Pieve di San Pietro in Vorno, you can reach the observatory via Via di Valle and then continue uphill for about 2 kilometres along the main road. The observatory is located on Monte della Gallonzora. The uphill stretch described is therefore a specific part of this route and should be taken into account when planning your day.

Agriculture and Cuisine

The Cucina Dello Scompiglio is located immediately outside the walls of the Tenuta. Whenever possible, it uses produce from the Tenuta's agricultural area and organic garden. This consists mainly of local seasonal fruit and vegetables, as well as herbs and wildflowers.

The Cucina serves meals, snacks and aperitifs in indoor and outdoor areas before and after performances at the SPE. Food and culture are thus directly connected with the events there.

Other Places for Orientation

For further orientation, you can also visit Lammari, San Ginese Di Compito, Valgiano, Pieve Di Compito, Ruota, All'erta, San Leonardo In Treponzio and Camigliano.
