Altagnana Between Mountain Ridges and Coastal Views

Altagnana is located on a mountain ridge in the left-hand part of the Frigido valley. From here, the view extends from the inner valley to the Ligurian coast, taking in the islands of Tino and Tinetto as well as the distinctive silhouette of Punta Bianca. The village therefore combines a pronounced mountain setting with a sweeping landscape, which can be just as important when planning a stay as the historic traces found in the village.

Churches, Gates and Religious Symbols

The Church of Santa Maria Annunziata was built at the end of the 15th century. It stands on a panoramic terrace in a dominant position above the village of Altagnana, making it one of the settlement's most distinctive landmarks. An older layer of the village's history can be found at the Porta di Berticagnana. This gate was built in the 14th century to defend the southeastern side of the settlement of Altagnana.

As early as the 13th century, Altagnana was a small fortified village known as Berticagnana. Along the narrow lanes, numerous marble Marginette bear witness to popular religious faith. A small square located along the provincial road is also home to the Monumento al Partigiano. The sculptor Brunello Pucci created the monument in 2005.

Local Craft and Culinary History

In Altagnana, remains of an oil press with a screw mechanism, numerous ovens, a hand loom and several covered, loggia-like passageways have been preserved. These elements were associated with craft and agricultural work and give the lanes a vivid historical dimension. The traditional practice of preparing lardo is also part of the local history. Several marble troughs used to produce lardo have survived as material evidence of this earlier tradition and are now reused in various ways.

Trails via Pasquilio

Provincial Road 55 leads from Altagnana to Monte Pasquilio and continues south to Monte Folgorito, which rises to 911 m. Pasquilio can be reached from Altagnana by car in just a few minutes. For hiking, CAI Trail 140 is a suitable option: it starts at Pasquilio with a moderate ascent through chestnut woods and is marked with the classic white-and-red signs of the Club Alpino Italiano, or CAI for short.

CAI Trail 33 leads from Pasquilio to Arni and is suitable only for experienced hikers. The two trails therefore represent different approaches to planning a hike: one begins with a moderate ascent through chestnut woodland, while the other expressly requires experience. Provincial Road 55 and the short drive to Pasquilio help with geographical orientation without equating the trails themselves.

Getting There via Massa

From Massa, you can reach Altagnana via Via dei Colli in the direction of S. Carlo Terme and then continue via Pariana. This route provides a clear access reference to complement orientation on site. Altagnana may therefore be of interest if you want to combine village history, scenic views and mountain trails in a single stay, while taking the destination's location within your personal travel plans into account when choosing your accommodation.
