Carignano Between Church Art and Ancient Paths

Carignano comprises lanes, a village square and the Natività di Maria church, with tangible historical evidence. The oldest part of the village includes covered sections of lanes with portals dating from the late Middle Ages and the early modern period. At the entrance to the village stands the church dedicated to the Natività di Maria. The village square is characterised by noteworthy buildings and numerous Maestà.

The church preserves several tangible traces of its history. An inscription commemorates the construction of a sacellum by Giovanni Andrea Santi dei Cargiolli from Ponzanello in 1532. The interior furnishings and frescoes date entirely from the 20th century. The Natività di Maria also has a remarkable wooden choir dating from 1911. Outside the church, the former cemetery grounds are now used as a playground.

In the village there is a marble portal dating from 1669. An inscription on the sandstone window lintel is dated 1557. Together with the portals in the oldest part of the village and the buildings around the village square, these features create a villagescape in which different historical periods stand side by side.

Historical Connections and an Old Path to Canepari

Carignano lies on an old route that connected the episcopal possessions of Ponzanello with the bishop's seat in Sarzana. This connection is part of the village's historical context and complements the visible evidence at the church, in the lanes and on the houses. An old, partly paved mule track leads from Carignano to Canepari. There is a fountain along this path. Carignano can be reached from Fosdinovo via Giucano or Canepari. From Sarzana, Carignano can be reached by continuing along Via dei Mulini. The local trail network is also relevant for orientation around Fosdinovo: within the municipal area of Fosdinovo, it includes CAI hiking trails, two stages of the Lunigiana Trekking route, two stages of the Sentiero dei Ducati and part of a stage of the Via Francigena.
