Filattiera between the Pilgrimage Route, Archaeology and Lunigiana Cuisine

Filattiera offers a combination of a pilgrimage route, archaeological evidence, Lunigiana cuisine and a varied river landscape. The area is crossed by the historic Via del Volto Santo pilgrimage route. This brings together different travel interests: you can combine religious and cultural-historical sites with walks, cycling tours and regional specialties, without reducing Filattiera to just one theme.

Culture and History in Filattiera

An important destination is the Sorano Archaeological Area. Visitors can tour the church and the surrounding archaeological sites there. Explanatory panels and casts of prehistoric stelae make the evidence presented there accessible to interested visitors. The Pieve di Santo Stefano di Sorano is also one of the stops on the official Lunigiana archaeological route of the anthropomorphic stelae.

The Pieve di San Giorgio also preserves an important epigraphic document: the Leodegar inscription, commemorating Leodegar and dating from 752. Sant’Antonio abate holds a special place in the annual calendar. Every year on January 16, the festival in Filattiera is celebrated after nightfall with a religious ceremony, a procession and three bonfires lit by the municipality’s three contrade.

River Landscape, Nature and Cycling Routes

The river and riparian habitats of the Fiume Magra area are home to numerous bird species, including kingfishers and various herons. The “Fiume Magra 2” area includes Filattiera’s extensive floodplain, with rows of trees, irrigation ditches, water mills and the typical “more”. These old dry stone river boundaries give the landscape a distinctive detail shaped by its former uses.

For exploring on foot, the Sentiero Natura offers a way to discover Filattiera’s natural surroundings. Those who want to experience the town by bicycle will find two differently designed points of reference: the Monte-Bosta route starts at Filattiera’s tourist information point and Bike Center and returns there after approximately 25 kilometers. The circular route “Tra borghi e boschi nella valle del Caprio” ends at the Pieve di Sorano in Filattiera and is signposted as route number 2 of the Lunigiana Bike Area.

The local cuisine can be experienced on several occasions. In June, Filattiera hosts La Festa della Fame e della Sete, a local festival featuring specialties from Lunigiana. In addition, you can sample dishes such as torta d’erbi, torta di patate, testaroli and spalla cotta filattierese in Filattiera. The culinary themes complement the archaeological and scenic impressions with a regional perspective on everyday life.
