Terricciola – Wine Landscapes and Etruscan Heritage

Between Clay, Vineyards, and Water

Terricciola becomes tangible through its trails, vineyards, and historic sites. The Sentiero 461 alternates between sections lined with cypress trees and views of vineyards, olive groves, and landscapes shaped by clay. The Sentiero 455 explores the clay landscape in the southwestern part of the municipality of Terricciola. On the Sentiero 451, the trail passes through vineyards and olive groves over predominantly sandy terrain.

The other trails also showcase different types of landscape. The Sentiero 453, Lago di Cuccheri, takes its name from the small artificial lake at Cuccheri and runs through sandy soils and Pleistocene sandstone. The Sentiero 454 leads through a vineyard into the Valle Botro di Rosciano and then follows the Botro through meadows and woodland. This makes it possible to take different landscape features into account when planning, without the individual trails all having the same character.

Nature along the Torrente Sterza and at La Sterza

A section of the Sentiero 464 runs along the Torrente Sterza for around 1.5 kilometres. The lake area near La Sterza is home to waterbirds such as coots, grey herons, mallards, and swans. For nature-interested travellers, this creates two clearly distinct themes: following a stream and observing waterbirds in the lake area.

Etruscan Traces and Historic Buildings

Terricciola's Etruscan history is reflected in its tuff hypogea. An underground area carved into sandy rock is connected with the Etruscan presence in the area and preserves rooms, finds, and Etruscan funerary stelae from the region. The Ipogeo del Belvedere is approximately 15.5 metres long and has six niches. The Ipogeo del Cassero has a linear layout with side niches and pointed arches carved into sandy rock.

In the surroundings of the Sentiero 451 there are small Etruscan rock necropolises, most of which are dated to the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC. The Chiesa di San Donato stands in the highest part of Terricciola. Its interiors are designed in the Neoclassical style of the mid-19th century. The church houses a Madonna and Child with Saints attributed to Anton Domenico Bamberini.

The area's historical diversity also includes the Badia di Morrona and the Santuario della Madonna di Monterosso. The Badia di Morrona is an old abbey associated with medieval monasticism, founded by the Cadolingi. The Santuario della Madonna di Monterosso is an old watch fortress with a 19th-century portico.

Wine and Local Events

The hills covered with grapevines have made Terricciola a wine-growing area. Wine consumption there has been documented since the Hellenistic period through grave goods from ancient tombs in the area. The Fattoria Fibbiano wine tour includes a tasting of five wines accompanied by Tuscan cured meats and cheeses. When choosing accommodation in Terricciola, you can therefore weigh the different focuses of landscape, Etruscan history, and wine and gastronomy.

The Festival della Fragola comprises two weekends in May with food stalls, music concerts, tastings, exhibitions, and performances. In this way, an event combining culinary and cultural elements complements Terricciola's enduring defining themes.

For additional orientation in the area, you can also find Soiana and Casanova.
