Between the Arno and Monte Pisano

Vicopisano lies between the course of the Arno River and Monte Pisano. The A.N.P.I.L. Col di Cincia–Val di Noce protected area is located in the mountainous area of Vicopisano. You can therefore get to know Vicopisano through both its buildings and its paths and landscapes.

Rocca, church and medieval architecture

The Rocca del Brunelleschi complex is an ensemble of medieval and Renaissance military architecture designed by Filippo Brunelleschi in 1438. For visitors, the Rocca is open every weekend from the Capodanno Pisano on 25 March until the end of November; from December to March, it is open on every second Sunday of the month. This schedule is therefore an important part of your planning if the fortress is to be part of your stay.

Religious architecture includes the Pieve di Santa Maria. It dates from the 12th century and is a well-preserved example of a Pisan Romanesque church. The Torre dell’Orologio provides another historical highlight: the tower was probably built in the 12th or 13th century as a military observation tower and is now used as a bell tower. Since September 2021, it has been possible to visit the Torre del Soccorso and walk along its entire wall walk to the fortress core of the Rocca.

Spring, museums and palaces

Vicopisano Castello in Fiore is an annual horticultural and plant fair held in spring that has incorporated the town’s historic streets and squares since 2012.

There are three museums in the vicinity of Vicopisano: the Museo Piaggio, the Museo di Storia Naturale and the Museo della Grafica. Palazzo Gambacorti, a palace, is also located nearby. This creates a thematic field for culturally interested travellers, ranging from religious and military architecture in the town to museums and a palace in the surrounding area.

Old paths and mountain landscape

Old paths lead from Vicopisano through olive groves, pine forests and chestnut woods to historic religious buildings, archaeological areas and outposts. There are routes for cycling, mountain biking and trekking in Vicopisano and on Monte Pisano. The landscape therefore appeals to different ways of getting around: you can combine historic destinations with routes through green surroundings and more athletic trails, without any specific route or level of difficulty being implied.

The Monte Cascetto and Monte Serra mountains are also located in the vicinity of Vicopisano. The Giardino dei Pini, a garden, and the Parco dei Salici, a park, are located nearby.
