Miemo: Village History, Landscape and Hiking Trails

Miemo is an old village of possibly Etruscan, but more probably medieval, origin. The historic character of the village includes the church of Sant'Andrea, an estate farm, a beautiful residential villa and several houses.

History between Pisa, Volterra and Florence

Miemo's strategic location led to disputes between Pisa, Volterra and Florence over possession of the village. The Castello di Miemo also held a certain significance due to its location near the border between Volterra and Pisa. In the 14th century, the demolition of Miemo's fortifications was ordered as part of a truce. These events give the village's history a clear political and territorial background, without reducing Miemo to its former history of fortification.

The church of Sant'Andrea was rebuilt after a long period of decay and abandonment under the patronage of Grand Duke Leopold I. Its bell tower has buttresses.

Miemmit and the Serpentine Hills

Miemmit is a calcium-magnesium-bearing rock that was discovered in the Miemo area around the middle of the 19th century. Tomson gave it the name Miemite or Miemmite.

The area around Miemo contains serpentine hills, particularly on the slopes descending towards the Cecina River. These slopes are rich in chestnut trees and dense beech forests. Together with Miemmit, they create a landscape that you can appreciate not only from a cultural perspective, but also from geological and nature-related points of view. In Miemo, the breeding of wild animals such as wild boar, mouflon, deer and partridges is also one of the most important economic activities.

Hiking Trails from Riparbella to Miemo

The Riparbella–Miemo hiking trail is a 14.6-kilometre walking route from the Riparbella wind farm to Miemo. In addition, the Parco eolico Riparbella–Miemo hiking trail leads on foot from the Riparbella wind farm to the village of Miemo. This trail is 14.16 km long, has an elevation gain of 529 metres and a medium level of difficulty, and offers viewpoints along the route. Anyone including this connection in their daily itinerary can treat it as a separate hiking section between the Riparbella wind farm and Miemo and plan short breaks at the viewpoints.

Destinations in the Wider Regional Area

The Ecomuseo dell'Alabastro, a museum, is located in the wider regional area around Miemo. The ruins of the Badia di Santa Maria di Montescudaio are also located in the area around Miemo. The Palazzo dei Priori, a palace, and the Teatro Romano Volterra, an ancient site, are likewise situated in the wider regional area.

Beaches are also part of the wider regional area around Miemo. They include Spiaggia Di Domani, Spiaggia Marina di Cecina, Spiaggia Ippocampo and Spiagge bianche.
