Campo Tizzoro: Industrial History and Trails

Campo Tizzoro can be explored through its industrial history, sacred architecture, and various trails. The former industrial facilities of the Società Metallurgica Italiana, built there in 1911, now house the Museo e Rifugi SMI. This example of industrial archaeology also includes the air-raid shelters. Campo Tizzoro therefore combines a clear connection to history with activity-oriented experiences.

Industrial History and Architectural Heritage

Between 1935 and 1942, Campo Tizzoro acquired its definitive urban form through the creation of a workers’ village and the facilities needed by the community around the factory. The workers’ village comprised 11 four-family houses for workers and managers, 28 two-family houses, and 22 single-family houses. The single-family houses were inaugurated on 29 August 1942; all the houses had a garden and a coach house.

A landmark building is the Church of Santa Barbara and San Luigi Gonzaga. It was consecrated on 23 August 1940 and is dedicated to Santa Barbara, the patron saint of powder magazines, and San Luigi Gonzaga. Designed by the architect Ottavio Marchetti, it is a rationalist sacred building with Romanesque-Gothic features, 16 side windows providing natural light, and a rafter roof covered with copper plates.

The 16th stage of the Romea Strata also leads to Campo Tizzoro toward the end of the route. It then follows the Torrente Maresca to Pontepetri. In the municipality of San Marcello Piteglio, the Foresta del Teso is predominantly made up of tall beech, chestnut, and fir trees; the Torrente Maresca runs through the forest.

Cycling Trails and Winter Route

For cyclists, the tour Sui binari della storia follows the original route of the former Ferrovia Alto Pistoiese. From Pracchia, the cycling tour reaches Campo Tizzoro via a paved road through part of the Valle del Reno.

A snowshoe route of approximately 13 kilometres begins in Campo Tizzoro and follows Sentiero 00 and the Alta Via dei Parchi. The different types of trails show that the town can be explored through both its industrial history and hiking, cycling, and winter landscape experiences.

The third edition of the Festa delle Associazioni della Montagna Pistoiese took place in Campo Tizzoro on Saturday, 13 June 2026, and Sunday, 14 June 2026.
