Montagnana: History, Forest and Cultural Landscape

Montagnana can be discovered through two interconnected perspectives: the town's medieval history and the landscape of the wider Marliana area. This combination appeals to travellers who wish to view cultural traces not in isolation, but in connection with forests, hillsides and the rural surroundings.

Historical Traces in Montagnana

Montagnana later became one of the fortified villages controlled by the Comune di Pistoia. Medieval walls stand at the entrance to Montagnana.

The Church of Saints Giusto and Lucia was probably founded before the 12th century. Despite later alterations, its northern side preserves traces of its medieval structure. When viewing the church, it is therefore worth taking into account not only its great age, but also the northern side and its traces of medieval structure.

Above the church stood the historic fortification of Montagnana, referred to as “castrum Montagnane muratum circum circa cum fortilitia”. Its position above the church adds another historical reference to the fortification to the picture of the town.

Forests, Hillsides and Agricultural Land

The wider Marliana area is a medium-altitude mountain region with dense forests, sunny hillsides and extensive areas of agricultural land. The landscape therefore encompasses different types of terrain and land use, without Montagnana having to be defined by a single type of landscape.

A large part of the Marliana area is covered by dense chestnut forests. Vineyards and olive groves are found on the gentler slopes. In this way, enclosed forest areas stand alongside cultivated hillsides shaped by viticulture and olive growing.

Cultural Connections and the Regional Surroundings

The Maggio Itinerante Pistoiese originated in 2003 in the Montagna Pistoiese and was inspired by Calendimaggio, an ancient folk tradition. This regional connection broadens the cultural perspective beyond the walls and church of Montagnana.

Monte Bersano and Poggiobello are peaks in the immediate vicinity of Montagnana. Le Piaggete and Monte Tagliola are further peaks in the surroundings of Montagnana. The mountain landscape is thus present both in the immediate vicinity and in the wider surroundings of the town.

The surroundings of Montagnana also include the Oltre Museum, the Museo dell'Ospedale del Ceppo, the Museo Civico Pistoia and the Palazzo Pretorio. For culture-focused days, Montagnana can thus be combined with religious architecture, the history of fortifications, several museums and another historic building in the surrounding area.

Forest and Route Connection

The first section of the route leads through the forest of Montagnana. The forest is therefore not only part of the landscape, but is also connected with the beginning of this route. Together with the peaks, chestnut forests, vineyards and olive groves, it creates a landscape theme that clearly differs from the town's historic structure.
