Comeana: Etruscan Heritage and Surrounding Landscapes
Comeana between Tumuli, Church and Nature
Comeana combines significant traces of its Etruscan past with the religious history of the town and direct links to the surrounding landscape. For visitors who want to discover Italy through more than just its famous cities, the town therefore offers several points of access: Montefortini represents archaeology, the Chiesa San Michele a long ecclesiastical history, and the surrounding area points to flora, fauna, as well as I Fornelli, La Cupola and Il Pratone.
Etruscan Heritage of Montefortini
The artificial tumulus of Montefortini is now approximately twelve metres high and contains two tombs. The grave goods include a turquoise glass bowl and carved ivory artefacts. These finds demonstrate the political and economic relationships of the local aristocracy over long distances. The tumulus of Montefortini is considered one of Tuscany’s most important archaeological monuments and represents the exceptional cultural development in the Carmignano area during the Orientalising period. The combination of tomb architecture, glass and ivory connects Montefortini with Comeana’s Etruscan past.
Church and Religious Local Culture
The Chiesa San Michele in Comeana has existed since the 13th century and was later remodelled in the 16th and 19th centuries. Another distinctive feature of the town’s history is the Processione di Gesù morto Redentore di Comeana. It is a historical-religious reenactment that goes beyond a conventional Way of the Cross. On Good Friday evening, this Processione includes a six-kilometre procession through Comeana. When planning your visit, the six-kilometre route in the evening should be taken into account.
Flora, Fauna and Landscapes in the Surrounding Area
Near the Parco della Fontina, an information board provides information about the local flora and fauna and points out the presence of crayfish in the Rio Elzana. I Fornelli is a hill in the area surrounding Comeana. The wider regional area also includes La Cupola as a peak and Il Pratone as a mountain. The Parco delle Cascine di Tavola is likewise located in the wider surroundings of Comeana.
Palaces and Regional Cultural Destinations
Palazzo Fiorelli, the Geppi Naldini Palace, Palazzo Banci Buonamici and Villa Medicea la Magia are located in the wider regional surroundings of Comeana. Villa Medicea la Magia is a castle, while Palazzo Fiorelli, the Geppi Naldini Palace and Palazzo Banci Buonamici are palaces.
Festa Etrusca and Swimming Lessons
The sixth edition of the Festa Etrusca di Comeana was scheduled to take place on 21 and 22 September 2024 in the olive grove below the princely tumulus of Montefortini. The programme of the Festa Etrusca 2024 included guided tours of the Montefortini tumulus, historical reenactments, themed children’s workshops and food stalls run by local associations. In Comeana, the Festa Etrusca linked the venue below the princely tumulus with guided tours of the Montefortini tumulus. For another form of local activity, the Piscina Comunale di Comeana offers swimming lessons for adults.
