Seano: Discover Art, History and Trails
Seano is ideal for planning a trip that brings together outdoor art, historic architecture, paths along the water and recurring festivals in one place. The range of themes extends from Quinto Martini’s sculptures to ecclesiastical architectural history, from nature-oriented sections of trail to markets and traditional events.
Art in the Green and Medieval Architectural History
The Quinto Martini Museum Park in Seano is a three-hectare green space with 36 bronze sculptures by Quinto Martini. This provides a clearly defined place at the heart of the local culture for engaging with sculpture. A historical counterpoint is Pieve San Pietro in Seano, an early medieval parish church. The document issued by Otto III on 25 February 998 lists Pieve San Pietro as a church recognised by the Bishop of Pistoia.
Its façade was extensively redesigned in 1928 and features a portal and two biforas in the neo-Romanesque style. Biforas are divided windows whose form, on closer inspection, stands out from the rest of the façade design. In the lower section, the masonry consists of regularly cut sandstone blocks; this part dates from the 12th to the 13th century.
Paths along the Torrente Furba
The Anello della Furba circular route begins at the car park of the Quinto Martini Museum Park in Seano. After the Ponte Nero, it follows the more natural-looking section of the Torrente Furba, characterised by bends and stone weirs. The route thus connects a starting point among the sculptures with a different kind of landscape impression by the water, without the two sections having the same character.
Le Vie dell’Acqua is designed as a natural-history, cultural and historical-artistic route. Its first section runs alongside the museum park and beyond the Casa Studio. For your planning, the access rules for the Casa Studio Quinto Martini are also important: it is open by prior arrangement on the second and fourth Saturdays and Sundays of each month, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Monthly Markets and Special Festivals
The events calendar in Seano includes recurring market dates. La soffitta in Piazza takes place on the second Sunday of every month, except in August. Campagna in piazza is a market for organic and natural products and takes place on the third Saturday of every month from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The two dates have different focuses: one turns attention to activity in the piazza, while the other focuses on products with an organic and natural orientation.
Religiously themed events include the Festa del Crocifisso di Seano. It honours a wooden crucifix behind the main altar of the Church of San Pietro in Seano. Every five years, the festival culminates in a historical procession with 250 costumed participants. In addition, the Festa della battitura reenacts the grain harvest and grape harvest every year. In this way, art, sacred history, landscape and recurring local events come together in Seano, offering different occasions for planning your trip.
