Belverde: Discover Gardens, Churches and History

Belverde has public gardens and a parish church.

Gardens and orientation in Belverde

The public gardens of Belverde are located between Via Val d’Aosta and Via Emilia. Casa dell’Acqua is located on Via Sardegna, opposite the church in Belverde. The gardens and Casa dell’Acqua are therefore located on different streets within Belverde.

Churches and historic architecture

The Chiesa del Beato Ambrogio Sansedoni in Belverde is a parish church and is considered part of the architectural heritage. In Monteriggioni, the Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta was built in the 13th century. Its façade is original and also dates from the 13th century. The Chiesa is in Belverde, while the Pieve is in Monteriggioni; the two buildings therefore belong to different local contexts.

Monteriggioni as a historical experience

The Castello di Monteriggioni was founded by the Republic of Siena in the second decade of the 13th century as a defensive post against Florence. To this day, it preserves a city wall approximately 570 metres long and 14 towers. The educational trail “Monteriggioni in Arme” comprises four rooms dedicated to the history of the fortress. They display faithful replicas of medieval and Renaissance weapons and armour, as well as models of historical siege weapons and techniques. Some weapons and pieces of armour can be touched and worn. The four rooms take visitors from the founding history of the Castello to specific weapons, armour and siege equipment.

Archaeology in Abbadia Isola

The MaM – Museo Archeologico di Monteriggioni is located in the former monastery complex of Abbadia Isola, which was founded in 1001 along the Via Francigena. The museum displays finds from prehistoric, Etruscan, Roman and medieval times from the area. The Etruscan and Roman finds therefore fall chronologically between the museum’s prehistoric and medieval finds.

Palaces, gardens and mountains in the surrounding area

The Museo dell’Acqua is a museum in the area surrounding Belverde. This area is also home to several historic and green destinations: Palazzo Spanocchi, Palazzo Tolomei and Bandini Piccolomini Palace are palaces. Giardino Emilio Montagnani and the Botanical Garden of the University of Siena are gardens. Monte Maggio and Monte Vasone are mountains in the area surrounding Belverde. Monte Maggio and Monte Vasone complement the palaces and gardens with two mountains in the area surrounding Belverde.

Family-oriented culture

Family performances took place in the Giardini Pubblici of Belverde in 2022 and 2023. A family performance with Mirko Gianformaggio, Andrea Lorenzini, Virna Gianformaggio and Emanuele Mineccia was also announced there for 28 August. The two years, 2022 and 2023, refer to performances that took place; the performance on 28 August remains phrased as an announcement.

For travel planning, you can therefore focus on specific interests: the town’s gardens and churches, the fortress history of Monteriggioni, archaeological collections, or the palaces, gardens and mountains in the surrounding area.
