Monteriggioni: Fortress Walls, History and Chianti

Monteriggioni combines an impressive fortress history with church art, nature experiences and regional specialities. If you are looking for a place with a clearly recognisable historical character for your trip to Italy, you will find several themes here that can be combined well: the walls of the Castello, the Borgo, museums, outdoor routes and wineries.

Fortress and Borgo

The Castello di Monteriggioni was founded in the second decade of the 13th century by the Republic of Siena to defend the border against the rival city of Florence. On the hilltop, the walls of Monteriggioni extend for approximately 570 metres; the fortifications include 14 imposing towers. This combination of strategic history, enclosed architecture and a distinctive silhouette shapes the view of the town.

At the centre of the Borgo stands the Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta on the main square. The church was built in the 13th century and has an original 13th-century façade. It also preserves a bell dating from 1299. Several historical layers therefore come together directly at this site: the origins of the Borgo, its religious architecture and a surviving testimony from the Middle Ages.

History to see

The Camminamenti sulle Mura offer views both of the inside and outside of the Borgo; their southern side overlooks Chianti. In addition, the educational tour “Monteriggioni in Arms” leads through four rooms, each dedicated to a period in the history of the fortress. On display are faithful reproductions of medieval and Renaissance weapons and armour, as well as models of historical siege weapons and techniques. Visitors can handle and put on some of the weapons and pieces of armour.

The MaM – Museo Archeologico di Monteriggioni is also important for a broader understanding of the history. It is located in the monumental complex of Abbadia Isola, a former monastery dating from 1001, a few kilometres from Monteriggioni. The museum presents the history of the Monteriggioni area from the Middle Ages back to prehistoric times. The chronological perspective therefore extends beyond the founding of the fortress to the older traces of human settlement.

Montagnola Senese and Trails

The Montagnola Senese is classified both as a Site of Community Importance (S.I.C.) and as a Site of Regional Interest (S.I.R.). It features coppice woods with holm oak (Quercus ilex), downy oak and maple, as well as chestnut stands at higher elevations, and contains numerous natural caves. This creates a distinct focus for nature enthusiasts alongside the historic town centre.

The Monteriggioni area has numerous historical and nature trails for outdoor activities, including routes for hiking, cycling and the Via Francigena. A cycle path leads from Castellina Scalo to the Colonna di Monteriggioni, a well-known resting place at the foot of the Castello di Monteriggioni. The different themes and routes help you plan your day around culture, landscape or exercise, without limiting the area to just one type of trip.

Chianti, Products and Event

In Monteriggioni, there are wineries where Chianti Classico DOCG and Chianti Colli Senesi DOCG can be tasted. Typical products of the Monteriggioni area also include saffron, cheese, honey and grappa. A special cultural addition is the historical event “Monteriggioni di torri si corona”: it traditionally takes place every year in July and has been documented for more than 30 years.
