Lama: Trails, Water and Nature
Lama: Trails, Water and Nature
The destinations around Lama range from varied routes and striking landscapes to small cultural sites and historic buildings. If you are considering a hotel in Lama, you can use these themes as a basis for planning your days and choosing your excursions.
Routes between Farma and Petriolo
The RSMF3 Solaia Petriolo route is 6.60 kilometres long and leads from Iesa to Petriolo along the Sienese slope. There are several places along this route where you can swim. At the end are the free thermal pools of Petriolo and a bathing spot on the Farma. This route therefore combines specific trail experiences with places to enjoy the water, which can be included as a separate focus in your travel plans.
The RSMF2 Contra Vignacci route has a different emphasis: there are three possible fords across the Farma; it then climbs to the Belagaio State Nature Reserve. The different options provide guidance on whether, during an excursion, you would prefer to combine a trail with a bathing spot or take the ascent to a nature reserve into account.
Pozzolungo and the Landscape
There is a car park at Antica Fonte for Pozzolungo, between Lama and Contra. One route there leads from Lama towards Solaia along the road to Quarciglioni and then continues via a path.
Pozzolungo is home to layered Carboniferous rock formations. They formed 320 million years ago and rise steeply above a stream. The Fosso di Solaia is also part of the landscape between Cerbaia and Lama: there, it springs from sources between the two places.
The wider surroundings of Lama include several mountains: Poggio la Biffa, Poggio del Casino, Monte Alto and Poggio Cerrete. Each of these names refers to a mountain in the area around Lama and adds to the picture of a landscape where trails, waterways, nature conservation and mountain ridges come together.
Small Chapel, Sculptures and Castles
In the village of Lama, the small Cappella di Lama stands at a road junction on Piazzale del Monumento. In Iesa, in the municipality of Monticiano, there is also the Parco di sculture di Kurt Laurenz Metzler. The Swiss artist Kurt Laurenz Metzler began the park in 1995; it contains more than fifty works. Alongside the natural experiences, a local religious building and an extensive collection of sculptures are therefore available for cultural excursions.
Castello di Capraia and Castiglion Che Dio Sol Sa, both castles, are located in the area around Lama. The ruins of the Abbey of San Galgano are also nearby. Castello di Montarrenti is a castle in the wider regional surroundings of Lama. The destinations therefore differ in their geographical setting and character, without requiring you to limit the landscape around Lama to a single type of excursion.
